Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Mansion

By three o’clock that afternoon, the news of the corporate receivership had swept through the city’s business circles like wildfire.

Outside the Bennett family mansion on Crestview Drive, two flatbed tow trucks pulled into the circular driveway. The uniformed drivers efficiently hooked up my mother’s white luxury SUV and my father’s classic Mercedes convertible, hoisting them onto the beds as the alarm systems chirped softly in the afternoon sun.

Inside the grand foyer, complete and total hysteria reigned.

My mother, Eleanor, stood at the foot of the sweeping marble staircase, wearing a silk robe, clutching her twelve-thousand-dollar handbag to her chest as if it were a life-preserver.

“You can’t take those cars!” Eleanor shrieked at the court-appointed bailiffs standing in the hallway. “My husband is Richard Bennett! He owns Bennett Development! Call the police immediately!”

“Ma'am,” the lead bailiff replied calmly, holding a clipboard. “We are executing a court order signed by Judge Harrison. All vehicles leased or purchased under corporate lines are subject to immediate repossession under the emergency receivership.”

Madison came running down the stairs, her mascara smudged, holding her smartphone out in front of her like a weapon.

“I just tried to order food on my delivery app!” Madison sobbed, her voice high and manic. “The card was declined! My personal checking account has a negative balance of twelve hundred dollars! Mom, what is happening?! Where is Dad?!”

The heavy front door clicked open.

Richard Bennett walked into the foyer. He was no longer wearing his immaculate suit jacket; his tie was loosened, his hair messily uncombed, carrying a single cardboard box containing his personal desk items.

Behind him walked Uncle Julian, carrying two heavy leather suitcases, looking frantically over his shoulder as if expecting federal marshals to appear from behind the hedges.

“Richard!” Eleanor cried, rushing over to him, grabbing his arm. “Tell these people to leave! They took my car! They shut off my store credit accounts! Madison can’t pay her rent!”

Richard looked at his wife, then at his younger daughter, his face devoid of all color, looking hollowed-out and exhausted.

“It’s over, Eleanor,” Richard muttered, his voice barely audible. “Emily took the company.”

“She what?!” Madison shrieked. “She can’t do that! She’s just our sister! Make her give the money back! Threaten to sue her!”

“We can’t sue her, Madison!” Richard suddenly screamed, his voice echoing violently off the high marble ceiling. “She has the forged loan documents! She has the Cayman routing slips! If we go near a courtroom, Julian and I are going to federal prison for wire fraud!”

Eleanor’s hands went limp. Her twelve-thousand-dollar handbag slipped from her fingers, hitting the marble floor with a heavy, dull thud—the very floor where my clothes had been scattered eighteen hours earlier.

She looked at her husband in absolute, paralyzing terror. “P-prison? Richard... what did you do?”

“Ask your brother what he did!” Richard snarled, pointing a shaking finger at Julian. “He promised me Aegis Capital was clean! He promised me Emily would never find out! He took eight hundred thousand dollars and left us holding the bag!”

Julian took a step backward toward the open front door, clutching his suitcases tightly. “Now, Richard, let’s be reasonable—I’m going to my apartment in Miami to sort this out with the overseas attorneys—”

“You’re not going anywhere, Mr. Vance,” a deep, authoritative voice called out from the driveway.

Two black unmarked sedans pulled up behind the tow trucks.

Four agents wearing dark suits with gold badges pinned to their belts stepped out, walking briskly up the front steps into the foyer.

The lead agent pulled a leather credential folder from his coat pocket, displaying it clearly.

“Julian Vance? Richard Bennett?” Special Agent Harris of the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced cleanly. “I am Special Agent Harris with the Financial Crimes Division. Pursuant to an arrest warrant issued two hours ago by the United States District Court, you are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud, and identity theft.”

Madison let out an ugly, hysterical scream, backing away into the stairs.

Eleanor sank onto her knees beside her dropped handbag, weeping loudly, burying her face in her hands as cold steel handcuffs clicked around Uncle Julian’s wrists.

Julian panicked, thrashing against the agent’s grip. “This is a mistake! I’m an investment advisor! Speak to my lawyer!”

“Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Vance,” Agent Harris said coldly, turning Julian around and escorting him down the steps.

Agent Harris then looked at my father, who stood completely still in the center of his grand foyer, his head bowed, his hands trembling as he held them out willingly to receive the handcuffs.

Before the agents led him out, Richard turned his head slowly, looking at the grand marble staircase, at his weeping wife, and at his terrified younger daughter.

He finally realized the absolute, horrific scope of his mistake.

He had traded a loyal, loving daughter who had spent seven years keeping his life together for the cheap, superficial illusions of wealth and male ego—and in the end, those illusions had destroyed everything he owned.
