Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO HELD THE HOUSE KEYS|

Michael Trent had worked at the Santoro estate for eleven years.

He supervised maintenance, managed household contractors, and coordinated large events.

He knew which doors remained unlocked during deliveries.

He knew when Rosa visited the market.

And he knew the schedule of every security guard assigned to the property.

For years, Nico had treated him as a trusted employee.

Now Michael's signature appeared on documents connected to a fraudulent property transfer.

And he had disappeared.

Nico placed the document on the kitchen table.

"Anthony, when did you last see him?"

Anthony frowned.

"Before the engagement dinner."

"What was he doing?"

"Supervising the catering deliveries."

I suddenly remembered something.

"Wait."

Everyone turned toward me.

"Michael told the kitchen staff to use the rear service entrance that evening."

Nico nodded.

"And?"

"He said the main hallway was being prepared for guests."

I swallowed.

"But that hallway wasn't being prepared."

Anthony's expression changed.

"That would have cleared the route to Antonio's bedroom."

I nodded.

"And the two men from Briarwood arrived through the rear entrance."

Nico looked toward the document.

"Michael helped arrange the transfer."

Rosa sat heavily in her chair.

"I trusted that man."

Her voice broke.

"He used to bring groceries when my knee was hurting."

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

"He wanted you to trust him."

Nico immediately requested that all of Michael's access credentials be disabled.

He also contacted Detective Laura Bennett, the investigator assigned to the suspected financial fraud.

She arrived within the hour.

Detective Bennett was a calm woman in her early forties with observant gray eyes and a direct manner.

She examined the documents recovered from the cellar.

Then she looked at Nico.

"We'll need to preserve everything."

He nodded.

"Whatever you need."

She turned toward Rosa.

"Mrs. Alvarez, did Mr. Trent ever ask unusual questions about your cottage?"

Rosa thought for a moment.

"Yes."

My stomach tightened.

"What did he ask?"

"He wanted to know whether Mrs. Santoro had kept any old papers."

Detective Bennett wrote something down.

"When?"

"About six months ago."

Nico frowned.

"That's when Victoria began planning the wedding."

Rosa nodded.

"Michael said they were updating the household records."

I remembered him entering Rosa's kitchen with a clipboard.

I'd thought nothing of it.

Now every ordinary detail seemed suspicious.

Detective Bennett continued questioning us.

We explained the secret cellar, the childhood photographs, and the possible identity of Elena Marquez.

When Emma's arrival came up, the detective became serious.

"Has anyone outside this group been told she's coming?"

I shook my head.

"Only her adoptive parents."

"Good."

She looked at Nico.

"We need to protect her privacy until we understand the threat."

Nico nodded.

"We'll follow her wishes."

A few hours later, Emma arrived at the estate.

I met her at the front entrance.

She wore jeans, a beige sweater, and the same nervous expression I'd seen when we graduated college together.

The moment she saw me, she began crying.

"Sophie."

I hugged her.

"I'm here."

She held on tightly.

"Is it really true?"

I pulled back.

"We have strong reasons to think so."

Her eyes filled.

"Can I see her?"

I knew who she meant.

Rosa.

The woman who had cared for her before she was old enough to remember.

I took Emma's hand.

"Come with me."

We entered the sitting room.

Rosa stood beside the window.

She'd changed into a pale blue dress.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged.

But her hands were trembling.

When she saw Emma, she stopped breathing.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emma looked at her.

"Mrs. Alvarez?"

Rosa covered her mouth.

"Elena?"

Emma began crying.

"I think so."

Rosa took one shaky step forward.

Then another.

She looked closely at Emma's face.

Her eyes.

Her dark curls.

The tiny crescent-shaped mark behind her ear.

"Oh, sweetheart."

Emma's face crumpled.

Rosa opened her arms.

And the young woman who had spent her life wondering where she came from stepped into the embrace of someone who had never forgotten her.

They held each other for a long time.

Rosa cried.

Emma cried.

I cried beside the doorway.

Eventually, Rosa pulled back.

She gently touched Emma's cheek.

"You look just like your mother."

Emma sobbed.

"Was she kind?"

Rosa smiled through her tears.

"The kindest."

"Did she want me?"

Rosa's face changed.

"Oh, Elena."

She held Emma's hands.

"Your mother loved you more than anything."

Emma covered her mouth.

Rosa continued.

"She didn't leave because she didn't want you."

"Then why?"

"Because someone dangerous was threatening you both."

Emma began crying again.

Rosa pulled her close.

"She was trying to keep you safe."

Nico appeared quietly in the doorway.

He didn't interrupt.

He simply stood beside me, watching.

After several minutes, Emma noticed him.

She stared.

"Nico Santoro?"

He smiled faintly.

"Hello, Elena."

Her expression changed.

"You know me?"

"I think we played together when we were children."

She laughed nervously.

"I don't remember."

"That's all right."

He pointed toward the garden.

"Apparently, you once threw my favorite toy truck into the roses."

Rosa began laughing.

"You deserved it."

Nico raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"You wouldn't share."

Emma smiled through her tears.

For the first time, the story of her childhood sounded less like a tragedy and more like a life that had included ordinary happiness.

Later, Detective Bennett arranged for a careful review of Emma's adoption records.

The dates and names matched what Rosa remembered.

An old photograph of Elena with the rose-shaped bracelet provided further support.

Emma agreed to obtain additional documentation to confirm her identity.

But Rosa didn't need a laboratory report to recognize the child she'd once carried in her arms.

She had recognized her the moment Emma entered the room.

That evening, we shared dinner in the smaller family dining room.

Emma sat beside Rosa.

Nico sat with Antonio.

And I found myself between the two families.

Antonio watched Emma carefully.

Then he reached toward her.

"Elena."

She turned.

"Yes?"

His eyes filled.

"Sorry."

Emma looked confused.

"For what?"

Antonio struggled.

"Couldn't..."

He swallowed.

"Protect."

Emma's expression softened.

She took his hand.

"I don't know everything that happened."

Antonio lowered his eyes.

"But I know you were frightened too."

He began crying.

Emma squeezed his hand.

"We can find out the truth together."

For the first time that evening, Nico looked genuinely hopeful.

But hope didn't last long.

At nine thirty, Anthony entered the dining room.

His expression was grim.

"Boss."

Nico turned.

"What happened?"

"We found Michael's car."

"Where?"

"At a motel outside Trenton."

Nico stood.

"Was he there?"

Anthony shook his head.

"But we found his phone."

Detective Bennett, who had remained on the estate, joined us.

She examined the recovered device.

Then she looked toward Nico.

"The last outgoing call was to Charles Ashford."

Nico's jaw tightened.

"When?"

"Three hours ago."

Anthony swallowed.

"There's something else."

Everyone looked at him.

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Michael standing beside a black SUV.

A woman sat inside the passenger seat.

Her face was partly turned toward the camera.

But I recognized her immediately.

Victoria Ashford.

Anthony continued.

"Security footage shows them meeting this afternoon."

Nico stared at the photograph.

Then Detective Bennett's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"Where?"

A pause.

"Is anyone injured?"

She listened.

Then slowly looked toward Rosa.

When the call ended, her voice was grave.

"Someone just broke into the county archive."

Nico frowned.

"What were they looking for?"

"The original property records connected to this cottage."

May you like

She looked toward Emma.

"And an adoption file bearing the name Elena Marquez."
