Chapter 22 - THE RING ON THE BEACH

Sarah Merrick did not like surprises. In her line of work as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialist, a surprise usually meant a catastrophic failure. She liked variables identified, perimeters secured, and communication crystal clear.

So when Daniel asked her to take a walk on Sandbridge Beach on a blustery, gray Sunday morning, she spent the first twenty minutes analyzing the environment for a reason.

The wind whipped her golden-blonde hair wildly across her face. She wore a heavy navy fleece, her hands shoved deep into her pockets. Daniel walked beside her, the collar of his jacket turned up against the chill, his shoulder occasionally bumping against hers. The beach was entirely deserted, the gray, churning waves crashing violently against the shoreline.

"You're quiet today, Chief," Sarah noted, glancing sideways at him.

"I'm just thinking," Daniel replied.

"About?"

Daniel stopped walking. He turned to face her, the ocean wind howling around them. He didn't look nervous, but he looked incredibly, intensely focused.

"About the night you saved my life," Daniel said softly.

Sarah’s brow furrowed. "Daniel, we've talked about this. It was a team effort. You would have done the exact same thing for me."

"I know," he said, taking a step closer, entirely ignoring the biting cold. "But I'm not talking about the tactical extraction. I'm talking about the fact that you stayed with me in the dark when you were terrified. You didn't leave me alone."

He reached out, gently pulling her cold hands from her pockets and taking them in his warm, calloused ones.

"I spent my entire adult life running toward the fight," Daniel continued, his voice carrying effortlessly over the crashing waves. "I thought loyalty to the teams was the only thing that mattered. But then I came to Virginia, and I saw a woman who possessed more courage in her kitchen than most men possess on a battlefield. I saw a mother who taught her son how to be strong enough to tell the truth."

Sarah felt a sudden, profound flutter in her chest. Her breath caught as Daniel slowly dropped to one knee in the wet sand.

He pulled the small velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a simple, elegant diamond set in a platinum band.

"I don't want to spend another day of my life without you, Sarah," Daniel said, looking up into her eyes with absolute, unshakeable devotion. "Will you marry me?"

Tears spilled hotly over Sarah's cheeks, carried away instantly by the wind. She looked at the man kneeling in the sand—a seasoned warrior who had humbled himself, who had embraced her son's grief, and who had become the anchor she never knew she needed.

"Yes," Sarah choked out, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Daniel. Absolutely."

He stood up, sliding the ring onto her finger before pulling her into a desperate, passionate kiss. They stood wrapped in each other's arms, the storm raging around them, entirely insulated by their own warmth.

When they walked back through the front door of their house an hour later, shivering but beaming, Matty was sitting at the kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal.

He looked directly at Sarah's left hand.

"Finally," Matty smirked, taking a bite of his cereal. "I was starting to think you were going to drop the ring in the sand, Daniel."

Sarah stopped in her tracks, looking between her son and her fiancé. "You knew?"

May you like

"Mom," Matty rolled his eyes affectionately. "I'm the one who told him to do it this weekend."

Sarah laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that filled the kitchen, and pulled her son into a tight hug. The house felt entirely, perfectly complete.
