Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Pierce Dynamics

The ground-floor lobby of Whitmore Tower was a soaring cathedral of glass, black granite, and towering indoor ficus trees. Rain lashed furiously against the four-story windows facing Fifth Avenue, where a dozen news vans had their satellite dishes extended into the gray afternoon sky.
In the center of the granite lobby, Nolan Pierce was struggling against the grips of two massive security officers.
His trench coat was soaked, his hair plastered to his forehead, his face pale and sunken. He looked like a man who had not slept in three days—because he hadn't.
“Get your hands off me!” Nolan bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. “Emma! Emma, come out here! Tell these animals to let me go!”
The private executive elevator chimed.
The brass doors slid open.
Graham and Emma stepped out side by side. Emma had changed into an elegant, dark charcoal cashmere maternity sweater and flat black boots. She walked with quiet authority, her hand held securely in Graham’s.
The lobby went dead silent. The few executives and receptionists lingered near the turnstiles, watching in rapt fascination.
“Let him go,” Graham ordered the guards.
The security officers released Nolan, stepping back two paces, their eyes fixed on his hands.
Nolan lunged forward, stopping only when Graham stepped half an inch ahead of Emma, blocking any physical approach.
“Emma,” Nolan gasped, clutching his chest. “The SEC froze my personal accounts. My credit cards were declined at the pharmacy an hour ago. The board removed me as CEO at noon. They replaced me with Vance’s interim receiver! They’re stripping my equity to pay off the bondholders!”
“That is what happens when you commit securities fraud, Nolan,” Emma said, her voice echoing clearly through the cavernous space.
“It wasn't me! It was Vanessa!” Nolan screamed, spittle flying from his lips. “And now she posted that garbage online claiming the baby isn't mine! You have to fix this, Emma! You have to release a public statement confirming that I’m the father! If the public knows the baby is mine, the board can’t completely shut me out of the family legacy trusts! They’ll have to give me a severance!”
Emma stared at him.
She didn't see an empire builder. She didn't see the charismatic founder who had charmed Silicon Valley. She saw a pathetic, parasitic creature who, even in the absolute nadir of his disgrace, viewed an unborn child merely as a bargaining chip to unlock an offshore trust fund.
“You want me to confirm you’re the father?” Emma asked, her voice dropping into a whisper that carried immense, devastating weight.
“Yes!” Nolan cried, falling to his knees on the cold, wet granite. “Please, Emma! For God’s sake, look at me! I gave you eight years of my life! I bought you that house in Queens! I gave you everything!”
“You gave me nothing, Nolan,” Emma said softly. “You took my youth, you took my work, you took the credit for every successful model I built for you, and then you tossed me into the street the moment I carried a life that demanded your responsibility.”
Suddenly, the glass revolving doors at the entrance spun violently.
Four federal agents in windbreakers bearing the yellow letters *FBI*, accompanied by two NYPD officers, marched into the lobby. Behind them, being led in handcuffs, was Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa was drenched in rain, her designer coat soaked, her wrists pinned behind her back.
“Nolan!” Vanessa shrieked as she was dragged past the turnstiles. “You bastard! You told the feds I forged your digital signature on the Blue Horizon accounts!”
“You did forge them!” Nolan yelled, scrambling up from his knees, his eyes wild with terror as he saw the federal badges. “Officers! Arrest her! She stole seven million dollars from my company!”
A tall agent with graying hair stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
“Nolan Pierce?” the agent asked.
“Yes! I’m the victim here! She embezzled—”
“Nolan Pierce, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, falsification of corporate records, and perjury in connection with the Pierce Dynamics SEC filing,” the agent recited coldly, snapping the handcuffs around Nolan’s wrists with a sharp, metallic *clink*.
“No! No, wait!” Nolan thrashing wildly. “You don't understand! Emma, tell them! Tell them it was Vanessa! Emma!”
Vanessa, being held by two NYPD officers ten feet away, began laughing—a bitter, unhinged cackle that chilled the entire lobby. “It’s over, Nolan! We’re both going to federal prison! You gave away the only woman who ever loved you for a lifestyle you couldn't afford!”
“Shut up! Shut up!” Nolan sobbed, his knees buckling as the agents dragged him toward the revolving doors.
Just before he was pushed through the glass exit into the flashing red-and-blue lights of the awaiting squad cars and the barrage of media cameras, Nolan twisted his neck, his eyes locking onto Emma one last time.
“Emma!” he screamed, tears streaming down his face, mixing with the rain dripping from his hair. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Please don't leave me!”
Emma did not move. She did not speak.
She stood beside Graham Whitmore, watching the glass doors spin shut, sealing Nolan Pierce away into the back of a police cruiser.
Suddenly, Emma gasped sharply, her hands flying to the lower swell of her stomach.
A warm, wet sensation rushed down her legs, soaking her boots.
Graham turned instantly, his arm wrapping around her waist as her knees gave way. “Emma?”
May you like
“Graham,” she whispered, her breath trembling with a mixture of shock and sudden, overwhelming awe. “The baby... my water just broke.”
