Chapter 13 - The Prodigal Parasites Return

The tranquility of our farm was shattered three days later by the unmistakable sound of an engine dying a painful, sputtering death at the end of our driveway.

I was stacking firewood by the side of the barn when I heard the familiar, grating screech of a transmission slipping. I paused, resting the heavy log against my knee, and watched as a dented, mud-spattered sedan wheezed its way up the lane.

The car doors swung open with a series of metallic groans. Out stepped Marcus and Vanessa.

They looked nothing like the polished, arrogant socialites who had once lorded over the Long Island mansion. Marcus was wearing a wrinkled button-down shirt with a coffee stain down the front, his hair unwashed and thinning visibly at the crown. Vanessa had traded her designer heels for scuffed canvas sneakers, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes wild, bloodshot, and frantic.

They slammed the car doors shut and began trudging up the dirt path toward the porch, where Clara was standing with a garden trowel still clutched in her hand, her expression turning instantly to stone.

"Arthur!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice carrying across the yard like fingernails on a chalkboard. "Don't you dare walk away! We need to talk to you right now!"

I didn't move. I slowly set the log down on the pile, wiped my hands, and walked out into the open space between the barn and the house, placing myself directly between them and the front door where Clara stood.

"You've got a lot of nerve showing your faces here," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "After everything you pulled, after the scams, the eviction notices, the cruelty—you think you can just drive up to my home?"

"We don't have a choice, Arthur!" Marcus snapped, taking a desperate step forward, his hands trembling as he gestured wildly toward his rusted car. "We’re living out of a motel in Queens! They threw us out of our apartment two days ago! My credit is destroyed, Vanessa’s social media accounts got permanently banned, and we have nowhere else to go!"

"That sounds like a personal problem," I replied coldly. "You were given every opportunity. You chose to burn it down."

"You don't understand!" Vanessa wailed, tears of genuine panic spilling down her cheeks as she stumbled closer. "It’s not just us! People are looking for us, Arthur! Dangerous people!"

I narrowed my eyes. "What are you talking about?"

Vanessa exchanged a terrified glance with Marcus before looking back at me. "Three days ago, two men in suits showed up at our motel room. They didn't identify themselves, but they knew everything about us—every debt we owed, every failed scheme, every viral video. They asked us where you were hiding."

"And you told them?" I demanded, a cold chill washing over me.

"We didn't know!" Marcus shouted defensively, throwing his hands up in the air. "We swear we didn't know where you went! But they showed us a photograph—the same black sedan that’s been following you—and they said if we didn't come out here and convince you to sign over your remaining power of attorney, they’d make sure we didn't live to see the end of the month!"

The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Julian Vance hadn't just sent a warning shot to me; he had used Marcus and Vanessa as pawns, tracking their desperation to find my location. They were expendable tools in a much larger, darker game of corporate extortion.

"You stupid fools," I muttered, shaking my head in disgust. "You sold me out the second things got hard, and now you're running back to me to save your skins?"

"Arthur, please!" Vanessa dropped to her knees right there in the dirt, sobbing hysterically, clutching at the hem of my jeans. "I know we were horrible. I know I was a monster. But we're family! You raised us!"

"I didn't raise monsters, Vanessa," I said, looking down at her with absolute pity. "I raised ungrateful cowards who mistook kindness for weakness."

Before Vanessa could respond, the deep, rumbling roar of a high-performance engine echoed from the end of the private lane.

We all froze.

Two sleek, matte-black SUVs crested the hill at terrifying speed, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as they roared down the gravel driveway, slamming on their brakes in a screech of burning rubber and boxing in Marcus and Vanessa’s rusted sedan.

The heavy doors flew open in unison. Four men in dark suits stepped out, their faces grim, their sunglasses reflecting the harsh afternoon sun.

And from the passenger side of the lead vehicle stepped Julian Vance.
