Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Judge Alvarez didn't even leave the bench to deliberate.

She pushed her spectacles to the top of her head, looked down at Mark, then shifted her gaze to Evelyn Vance sitting between the two deputies in the gallery.

“In my twenty-two years on the family court bench,” Judge Alvarez began, her voice shaking with controlled, judicial fury, “I have rarely witnessed an abuse of the legal system as grotesque, cowardly, and morally bankrupt as the one displayed before me today.”

She looked at Mark.

“Mr. Vance, your confession saves you from an immediate perjury remand today, but it does not save you from the consequences of your monumental failure as a father. By your own admission, you placed a dangerous controlled substance into your infant daughter’s environment for financial gain. You conspired to defraud this court and weaponize the protective apparatus of this state against an innocent woman.”

She picked up her order sheet.

“It is hereby ordered: Counter-petitioner Tessa Vance is awarded sole legal custody and sole physical custody of the minor child, Lucy Vance. Mark Vance’s parental rights are suspended indefinitely. Any future contact will require a formal motion, six months of verified psychological counseling, and will be strictly limited to therapeutic, professionally supervised visitation at his sole expense.”

Mark let out a choked sob, nodding his head in complete submission.

“Furthermore,” Judge Alvarez continued, her gaze turning like an artillery cannon toward the gallery, “exclusive use and possession of the marital residence is permanently assigned to Tessa Vance. Mr. Vance’s commercial assets will be subject to an immediate judicial lien to secure child support arrears and full reimbursement of Mrs. Vance’s legal fees.”

The Judge turned to the second row of the gallery, where Assistant District Attorney Marcus Brody sat taking notes.

“Mr. Brody,” Judge Alvarez said clearly. “The record of these proceedings, including all physical exhibits, audio recordings, and video surveillance, is hereby transferred directly to the County District Attorney’s Office for immediate criminal action regarding conspiracy, child endangerment, and the filing of a false police report.”

Brody stood up. “Thank you, Your Honor. The state is already prepared.”

Judge Alvarez slammed her gavel down one final time. “Court is adjourned.”

The moment the gavel struck, Brody signaled to the two deputies standing behind Evelyn.

“Evelyn Vance?” Deputy Miller asked, stepping into the row. “Please stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

Evelyn’s face turned an apoplectic shade of crimson. “Take your hands off me! Do you know who I am? I am the head of the Grace Fellowship benevolence committee! This is an outrage! Richard, do something!”

Richard Sterling didn't even look back from the counsel table. He was already packing his legal pads into his briefcase, shaking his head. “I represent Mark, Evelyn. You’re on your own.”

“Mark! Tell them!” she shrieked as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. “Tell them you made it up! Mark!”

Mark didn't turn around. He sat slumped at the defense table, his shoulders shaking with silent, broken sobs, as his mother was marched down the center aisle of the courtroom in full view of the bailiffs, the attorneys, and the remaining members of her church.

As she passed my table, Evelyn lunged slightly toward me, her eyes wild, her teeth bared like a trapped animal. “You ruined this family, you selfish bitch! You took everything from me!”

I didn't flinch. I stood tall, my hands resting calmly on the mahogany table, looking at her not with anger, but with absolute, total indifference.

“You took everything from yourself, Evelyn,” I said softly. “Lucy will never know your name.”

The deputies pushed Evelyn through the heavy double doors into the hallway, her shrill, hysterical screams echoing down the marble corridor until the elevator doors finally cut her off.

Sarah Chen let out a long, satisfied exhale, turning to me with a brilliant, predatory smile. “That, my dear Tessa, is what we call an absolute clinical amputation.”
