Chapter 4 - Returning to the Ballroom

Upstairs in the grand ballroom, the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory charity gala to tense, suffocating panic.

Arthur Sterling was pacing near the entrance, cornered by three different journalists from local business journals who had caught wind of the federal vehicles parked outside. Vivienne was dabbing at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, surrounded by her sympathetic socialite friends who were whispering frantically among themselves.

The double doors at the end of the ballroom swung open.

Silence slammed over the room like a physical wave.

All heads turned toward the entrance. Expecting to see Briggs dragging Marisol out in handcuffs, the crowd instead parted to reveal Marisol walking back into the ballroom flanked by three federal agents in suits, with Special Agent Vance carrying a federal evidence case.

Arthur stopped pacing. His face turned the color of curdled milk. “What... what is the meaning of this?! Where is security?! Why are federal agents in my charity gala?!”

Vivienne dropped her handkerchief, her jaw going slack. “Dad... that’s the waitress! Why are they walking with her?!”

Marisol didn't stop walking until she stood directly in front of Arthur and Vivienne Sterling. The brilliant crystal chandeliers overhead caught the silver badge gleaming proudly pinned to the lapel of her dark blue uniform vest—a badge most people were too blinded by wealth to notice when she first arrived.

“Good evening, Mr. Sterling,” Marisol said, her voice carrying crystal-clear across the hushed ballroom. “I’m Special Agent Marisol Reyes with the FBI Financial Crimes Division.”

The gasp that escaped Arthur’s throat sounded like a deflating tire.

“FBI?” Arthur choked out, stepping backward until his heels hit the edge of a mahogany table. “That’s... that’s absurd! You’re a waitress! You served my table wine an hour ago!”

“I am an undercover federal investigator,” Marisol corrected smoothly, tapping the tablet in her hand. “For the past eight months, our division has been investigating Sterling Real Estate Holdings for systematic mortgage fraud, corporate tax evasion, and illegal offshore asset concealment.”

Vivienne shrieked, pushing past her father. “You lied to us! You infiltrated our private event under false pretenses! That’s entrapment! You planted that accusation yourself!”

“Actually, Ms. Sterling,” Marisol said, turning her gaze toward the wealthy heiress with a chilling, clinical precision, “you provided the public spectacle all on your own. You didn't lose your grandmother’s diamond bracelet. You were attempting to plant a corporate flash drive containing encrypted slush-fund ledgers into my service coat, using a fabricated theft accusation to ensure security would search me and inadvertently contaminate the evidence.”

Marisol raised the ruggedized tablet, hitting play on the high-definition VIP hallway security footage.

On the giant projection screen behind the string quartet—which the federal agents had smoothly overridden—crystal-clear video began playing. It showed Vivienne Sterling nervously checking her surroundings, sneaking up to a service cart, and sliding the black USB drive directly into the pocket of Marisol’s uniform jacket, followed by her rehearsed outburst by the dessert table.

The entire ballroom watched in horrified, stunned silence as Vivienne’s crime played out in 4K resolution across the room.

Several prominent donors dropped their champagne flutes. Arthur grabbed his chest, gasping for air as the full weight of federal exposure crashed down upon him.
