Chapter 3 - Paper Trails and Cold Hard Cash

The marble atrium of the Grandview Bay Resort echoed with the shrieking voice of my sister Emma.

"My sister Claire Peterson is a criminal!" Emma wailed, holding a printed placard featuring an unflattering photo of me taken at our mother's funeral. "She uses her corporate position to embezzle elderly residents' pensions! She’s evicting our father while he recovers from a heart condition! Where is the general manager? Where is corporate governance?"

A small crowd of mid-morning tourists, slot machine players, and hotel guests had formed a loose ring around her. Greg was pacing the perimeter like a nervous hyena, his mobile phone mounted on a gimbal, live-streaming the entire spectacle to his social media channels while two local freelance cameramen filmed the commotion.

"Keep streaming, Greg!" Emma shouted, playing directly to the camera with manufactured tears streaming down her contoured cheeks. "They can't silence us! The truth will—"

The private executive elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical chime.

I stepped out onto the marble floor, flanked by Detective Okonkwo on my right and four imposing Grandview security officers in tailored dark suits on my left.

The moment Emma saw me, her eyes flashed with triumphant malice. "There she is! There’s the coward who pushed her own—"

"Emma Peterson," Detective Okonkwo’s voice cut through the cavernous lobby like a crack of thunder. She didn't shout, but her authority was absolute, honed by fifteen years of commanding crime scenes. "Step away from the security desk and put the megaphone on the floor. Now."

Greg swung the camera toward Okonkwo, sneering. "Who are you? Her private security guard? We have a First Amendment right to assemble in a public commercial space! You can't touch us!"

"I am Detective Sarah Okonkwo, Badge 412, County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Division," Okonkwo said, advancing with steady, deliberate steps. "And this is a privately owned commercial casino, Mr. Vance. You are officially trespassing. Furthermore, you are currently in active violation of an emergency protective order served against you and your wife less than eighteen hours ago."

Emma’s face flushed an ugly, blotchy red. "I am not in violation of anything! Claire assaulted our father at Riverside! She fell into the pool on purpose to frame him, and now she’s using dirty casino money to buy off the local cops!"

"Is this the 'dirty casino money' you’re referring to, Emma?" I asked, stepping forward and opening a slim leather folder.

I pulled out a glossy, high-resolution surveillance capture and held it up for the cameras to see.

It was a freeze-frame from the Grandview’s drive-through banking lane, dated twelve days ago at 2:14 PM. It showed Emma sitting in the passenger seat of her white BMW, endorsing the back of a cashier’s check drawn from Harold Peterson’s depleted savings account in the amount of $14,500.

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. The fake tears dried instantly.

"You told Dad that Riverside had raised its maintenance fees by three hundred percent," I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the hushed lobby. "You told him the only way to protect his remaining savings was to deposit them into Greg’s digital media LLC so the 'evil state conservators' couldn't touch it. You sat on the patio at Riverside, watched him sign over the last liquid assets Mom left him, and then you bought yourself a pair of Cartier bracelets and paid off three months of delinquent mortgage installments on your house."

"That's a lie!" Greg yelled, his voice cracking with sudden panic. He dropped the gimbal slightly, no longer keen on broadcasting this specific conversation to his viewers. "That was a private loan between family members! Harold invested in my agency!"

"Harold is seventy-two years old and under clinical observation for early cognitive impairment," Okonkwo said, pulling a folded legal document from her coat pocket. "Under State Penal Code Section 368, knowingly obtaining an elder’s property through undue influence, misrepresentation, or false pretenses constitutes Grand Theft by Elder Financial Exploitation—a Class C felony carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of four to eight years."

Emma lunged toward me, her hands clawed, completely losing her composure. "You ruined everything! You always had Mom’s favor! You got the good jobs, you got the clean reputation, and you left me with nothing! Dad hates you! He’s always hated you! He wished it was you in that grave instead of Mom!"

Before she could close the distance, two Grandview security guards stepped smoothly into her path, intercepting her wrists with clinical precision.

Detective Okonkwo stepped behind Emma, took her arms, and snapped the steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, metallic *click*.

"Emma Peterson, you are under arrest for felony elder abuse, financial exploitation over twenty-five thousand dollars, and criminal violation of a protective order," Okonkwo recited calmly.

"Get off me! Greg, call the lawyer! Call Dad! Film this! Film them brutalizing me!" Emma shrieked, thrashing against the restraint as the hotel guests pulled out their phones to record her meltdown.

Greg backed away toward the revolving glass doors, his face pale as chalk. "I didn't do anything! I was just driving the car! It was all her idea! She told me her father owed her that money!"

"Don't move, Mr. Vance," two uniformed sheriff's deputies entered from the main entrance, blocking Greg’s exit. Within seconds, Greg was pinned against the glass doors, the video camera falling to the terrazzo floor with a sickening crunch as the plastic housing shattered.

I stood there, watching my sister being led away in chains through the lobby of the building where I had worked sixty hours a week for a decade to prove my worth to a family that despised me for my competence.

As Emma passed me, her hair disheveled, spit flying from her lips as she cursed my name, she screamed, "Dad will never forgive you for this! He’s going to testify against you! He’s going to tell the whole world you drove him to this!"

May you like

"Dad doesn't even know what you did to him, Emma," I said quietly, looking directly into her wild, venomous eyes. "He still thinks you love him. But he’s about to find out. Because the eviction hearing at Riverside is tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. And for the first time in his life, Harold Peterson is going to sit in a room where every single lie is laid out under fluorescent lights."
