Chapter 48 - The Fire on Beacon Hill

The silence that followed was broken only by the rising wind howling through the rigging of the *Zephyr*.

I did not flinch. I did not drop my eyes. I looked directly into Christian’s arrogant, smirking face, and then I turned to Julian, whose wide, devastated eyes were pleading for a denial.

"Is it true, Mother?" Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, shredded by the salt air. "Is that why Helena sneered at the portrait? Is that what she meant when she whispered *Oops*?"

"No, Julian," I said, my voice carrying the steady, absolute authority that had anchored our household for five decades. "It is not true. But it is the lie Arthur Sterling told his son on his deathbed to justify fifty years of failure."

Christian’s smile vanished instantly. His jaw tightened, the pale gray eyes narrowing into slits. "My father was Harold Sterling! The naval records show—"

"Your father was Arthur Sterling," I interrupted, my voice rising over the wind, resonant and clear. "Harold’s identical twin brother. The brother who was cashiered from the United States Naval Academy in 1939 for selling exam papers. The brother who fled to neutral Portugal, assumed Harold’s name using forged identification papers, and spent the war brokering stolen Dutch art for the Vichy regime."

Vivienne de Winter gasped, taking a step backward toward the sedans. "How... how do you know that?"

"Because Harold didn't write the operational log in that conning tower," I said, pointing my cane directly at the *Zephyr*. "Arthur did. Arthur was the one who brought that U-boat into Boston harbor in the dead of night in 1944, attempting to smuggle his stolen loot into the country under Harold’s naval identity. And Harold caught him right here, on this very pier."

I took a slow step toward Christian, watching the certainty bleed out of his expression.

"Harold didn't scuttle that vessel to hide stolen gold, Christian. He scuttled it to trap his brother. He gave Arthur a choice: face a firing squad for treason against the United States, or take a one-way passage to South America and never speak the Sterling name again."

"You're lying!" Christian roared, his diplomatic mask completely shattering. He lunged forward, reaching for my coat, his fingers clawing for the silver locket. "You old witch, you're fabricating records to protect your bastard!"

Julian didn't hesitate. Before Christian’s hand could touch my collar, Julian’s fist struck him with the full, violent force of eighty years of Sterling pride.

The blow landed squarely on Christian’s jaw with a sickening crack. Christian’s head snapped sideways, his knees buckling as he crashed heavily onto the wet cobblestones, his diplomatic passport flying into the harbor mud.

"Don't you ever touch my mother," Julian snarled, standing over him, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a fierce, untamable light.

Special Agent Vance immediately stepped between them, his hand raised. "That’s enough! Both of you, stand back!"

From behind us, high on the hill overlooking the harbor, the distant chime of sirens began to multiply. But these were not maritime horns or police cruisers. They were the deep, mournful sirens of the Boston Fire Department.

Marcus looked up from his tablet, his face contorted in horror. "Eleanor! The security feed from Beacon Hill! The ancestral house... there are fire alarms going off in the library wing!"

Vivienne de Winter smiled through her pale lips, her eyes glittering with demonic spite. "Did you really think we only had one team in Boston, Eleanor? If we cannot have the release manifest... neither will you."
