Chapter 5 - The Purge

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Dominic stood over the corpse of the man who had shaped his youth, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured breaths. The air was thick with the acrid stench of cordite, blood, and ozone.

He slowly turned toward the vault.

Emily was still standing there, holding the heavy shotgun, her arms finally beginning to tremble as the adrenaline crashed out of her system. She looked at Marco’s body, then up at Dominic.

Dominic walked toward her slowly. He reached out and gently took the shotgun from her hands, setting it safely against the wall. Then, without a word, he pulled Emily Bennett into his arms.

She didn't pull away. She collapsed against his chest, burying her face into his bloodstained shirt, her fingers clutching his back with a desperate, shaking intensity. Dominic wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and rain that belonged entirely to her.

"It's over, Emily," he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You're safe. Rose is safe."

"You came back," she sobbed softly against his neck. "I thought... when I heard the explosions, I thought you were dead."

"I will never leave you," Dominic whispered, the truth slipping out before he could construct his usual walls of defense. He pulled back slightly, cupping her face in his hands, wiping away the tears with his thumbs. "I swear to you on my life, Emily. Never."

From inside the vault, two little arms wrapped around Dominic’s left leg.

Dominic looked down. Rose was looking up at him, her wide brown eyes solemn, holding the slit-open teddy bear against her chest.

"Uncle Dominic?" Rose asked in a small voice. "Did you catch the bad guys?"

Dominic sank down to one knee, ignoring the pain in his bruised ribs. He gently touched the little girl's cheek. "Yes, sweetheart. We caught them all. The game is over."

"Did Miss Serena go away?"

"Miss Serena is never coming back," Dominic said with absolute finality.

Over the next four hours, the Lakeview estate became the staging ground for a surgical, merciless retribution.

Adrien, bandaged and back on his feet, coordinated the cleanup. Three unmarked vans arrived through the rear gates. The bodies of Marco Bellini and his strike team vanished into the cold depths of the Chicago industrial district, their existence erased by dawn.

Dominic sat behind his desk in the library, the titanium drive plugged into an encrypted laptop.

The contents of the cipher were devastating. It contained three decades of Marco’s double-dealings, secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands containing ninety-four million dollars, and encrypted video logs confirming Marco had contracted the poison that killed Dominic’s father.

By three in the morning, Dominic had summoned the heads of the four remaining Chicago families to a neutral warehouse in the Fulton Market district.

He didn't bring an army. He brought only Adrien and a leather binder containing copies of the cipher's financial trails.

When Dominic walked into the dimly lit conference room, the four bosses fell dead silent. They had heard rumors of the gunfire in Lakeview; they had expected Marco Bellini to walk through the door to announce a new regime.

Instead, Dominic Vitale threw Marco’s severed signet ring onto the center of the mahogany table. It rolled across the polished wood, stopping against the water glass of Don Salvatore of the South Side.

"Marco Bellini is dead," Dominic announced, his voice ringing like an iron bell in the silent room. "Serena Vale is in federal custody on an anonymous tip containing international treason and espionage charges—she will spend the rest of her natural life in a supermax facility in Florence, Colorado."

The four bosses exchanged terrified glances.

"Marco attempted a coup," Dominic continued, placing his hands flat on the table and leaning forward. "He broke the sacred laws of this city. He attacked my private residence. He threatened innocent blood."

He opened the binder, tossing the financial documents in front of them.

"This is the ledger Marco stole from my father. Ninety-four million dollars. Starting tomorrow morning, thirty percent of those funds will be distributed equally among your territories to repair trade routes and secure your supply chains."

Don Salvatore looked up, his weathered face pale. "And the other seventy percent, Dominic?"

"The other seventy percent will be placed into an irrevocable trust," Dominic said, his eyes scanning each man in turn with unmistakable authority. "Under the name of Rose Bennett. The daughter of David Bennett, who died protecting this syndicate."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a low, lethal purr.

"Chicago is at peace. The Vitale family holds the docks, the transport, and the city council. If any man in this room, or any man under your command, ever speaks the name Bellini again—or if any man ever looks sideways at the Lakeview house—I will not merely kill him. I will erase his entire bloodline from this earth. Are there any objections?"

No one spoke.

Don Salvatore bowed his head slowly. "Hail to the Don."

One by one, the other three bosses stood and bowed their heads in absolute submission.

May you like

"Hail to the Don."
