Chapter 6 - The Digital Reckoning

Narcissists do not go quietly into the night. When cornered, their first instinct is not remorse; it is annihilation.

On Wednesday morning, forty-eight hours after we filed the criminal complaint with the federal prosecutor, my phone exploded.

I was in my studio reviewing floral mockups for a corporate gala when Nolan called me.

“Rose,” Nolan said, his voice tense. “Don't look at Instagram or Facebook until Amon gets home.”

“What happened?” I demanded, already opening my laptop. “Nolan, tell me.”

“Cressida went public.”

My fingers flew across the keyboard.

Cressida had posted a twelve-slide Instagram carousel, cross-posted to TikTok and Facebook, where she had accumulated nearly fifty thousand followers across her various failed influencer personas.

The cover slide was a black-and-white photo of her face, tear-stained and dramatic, under a bold title: *THE TRUTH ABOUT MY TOXIC SISTER.*

The post was an absolute, libelous fabrication:

*“I have stayed silent for too long,”* Cressida wrote. *“At my sister Rosalind’s wedding, after years of enduring her emotional abuse, corporate bullying, and relentless cruelty, I tried to make peace. Instead, Rosalind attacked me. During a heated argument near the cake table, Rosalind grabbed the cake knife. In the struggle to defend myself, she accidentally injured her own arm. Now, she is using her wealth, her connections, and high-priced lawyers to falsely prosecute me, ban me from seeing my parents, and fabricate financial lies to put our father in prison. She is trying to destroy our family out of sheer, narcissistic jealousy. Please share. Protect young female entrepreneurs from corporate predators.”*

Underneath the post, thousands of comments were already rolling in.

* *“Disgusting! Cancel Vance Events!”*

* *“She stabbed herself to frame her sister? Psycho!”*

* *“Boycott Vance Events & Design! Look at her company page!”*

My business Instagram and Google business profiles were being flooded with hundreds of one-star reviews. Corporate clients were tagging me in frantic emails.

*“Rosalind, what is this online controversy? Our board of directors cannot be associated with an active assault investigation. We may need to re-evaluate our holiday gala contract.”*

A cold sweat broke out across my collarbone. Cressida was trying to execute a public lynching before the law could catch up to her. She thought that if she created enough social media noise, she could force me to drop the charges to save my business.

She had forgotten one crucial detail.

I was an event planner. I lived and died by contingency planning, venue contracts, and comprehensive digital documentation.

Ten minutes later, Amon walked into the studio, his face thunderous. “I saw it.”

“Call Nolan,” I said, my voice ice cold. “Tell him to release the footage.”

“Are you sure?” Amon asked gently. “It’s graphic, Rose. Everyone will see it.”

“They already think I’m a monster,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “Let them see the truth.”

At two o’clock that afternoon, Nolan Vance’s law firm issued an official press release and legal notice of an eight-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Cressida Vance-Holbrook.

Attached to the press release was a high-definition video link.

It was the raw, unedited security footage from the ballroom patio cameras at the estate.

The video didn't lie.

In crystal-clear 4K resolution, the world watched Cressida stumble in, screaming at me. They watched me step backward, hands raised in a placating gesture. They watched Cressida snatch the heavy silver knife from the table.

They watched her deliberate, venomous downward slash directly at my throat.

They watched Amon dive to save me. They watched the blade bury itself into my arm. They watched the cake collapse, my white dress turn crimson, and my mother scream at the crowd while my father stood in the corner, chillingly sipping his scotch.

To accompany the video, Nolan released the certified hospital trauma report, photographs of the thirty-two surgical stitches, and the official police incident report confirming Cressida’s arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The internet’s reversal was instantaneous, violent, and absolute.

Within two hours, the hashtag *#JusticeForRosalind* was trending nationally on Twitter.

The comments on Cressida’s post turned into a bloodbath:

* *“You tried to murder your sister on her wedding day and then cried victim on Instagram? You are a psychopath!”*

* *“The security footage is horrifying! Lock her up!”*

* *“Look at the mother defending her while the bride bleeds out! What kind of sick family is this?”*

Cressida’s follower count plummeted by tens of thousands in minutes. She desperately tried to delete comments before finally turning off commenting altogether. By four in the afternoon, under the weight of hundreds of thousands of angry messages, she deleted her entire Instagram and TikTok accounts.

My corporate clients immediately sent contrite follow-up emails, profusely apologizing for jumping to conclusions and offering full support.

The digital weapon Cressida had tried to use to destroy me had backfired, detonating directly in her face.

And the real bomb—the federal indictment—hadn't even dropped yet.
