Chapter 4 - The Mother's Retribution

The morning sun over Lake Michigan did not bring warmth; it illuminated a city caught in the throes of an unprecedented scandal.
The gates of the Reynolds family estate in Lake Forest were surrounded by police cruisers, their flashing red and blue lights painting the manicured hedges in garish strokes. But Sophia Reynolds was not inside.
She had slipped out through the service entrance before dawn, driven by a desperate, feral cunning. She knew the police were coming. She knew Vincent had seen the footage. Her world had collapsed in a single night, and in her twisted, narcissistic mind, there was only one person responsible for her ruin: Claire.
At 9:00 AM, Claire Bennett Moretti was stepping out of the Vance Consortium’s private medical research facility in downtown Chicago. She had just finished a meeting with the pediatric board regarding a new burn-trauma wing she was funding. Leo and Maya walked beside her, each holding one of her hands, chatting animatedly about the science exhibits they were going to visit that afternoon.
Two bodyguards walked four paces behind them.
"Claire!"
A voice, shrill, cracked, and breathless, sliced across the plaza.
Claire stopped. Leo immediately shifted, subtly placing his small shoulder in front of his sister.
Sophia stood twenty yards away. The elegant, immaculate socialite from the gala had vanished. She wore an oversized trench coat, her hair was a tangled nest around her gaunt face, and her eyes burned with a wild, manic intensity.
"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Sophia screamed, stumbling across the stone pavers. Passersby halted, murmuring and pulling out their smartphones. "You think you can just come back from the dead and take everything from me? I spent seven years building this life! I was supposed to be his wife!"
The Vance security guards moved forward instantly, but Claire raised a single hand, signaling them to hold.
"You were never going to be his wife, Sophia," Claire said, her voice calm, projecting effortlessly across the open courtyard. "Even when Vincent believed I was dead, he never married you. Did you ever ask yourself why?"
Sophia stopped, her mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.
"Because in the deepest part of his soul, he knew," Claire said coldly. "He knew what you were. He knew the stench of your cowardice, even if his mind refused to admit it."
"Shut up!" Sophia shrieked, reaching deep into the pocket of her coat. "I saved him! He belongs to me! If I can't have him, you won't have your precious little bastards either!"
She whipped out a small glass container filled with an amber liquid—a concentrated laboratory acid stolen from her family’s old chemical supply depot.
"Mama!" Maya cried out.
Before Claire’s security could close the distance, a figure tore across the plaza like a raging hurricane.
A black SUV had slammed onto the curb, its tires smoking against the concrete. The driver’s side door had flown open before the vehicle had even completely stopped.
Vincent Moretti hit Sophia at full speed.
He did not hesitate. He did not pull his punches. He slammed into Sophia’s side, knocking the acid container from her grip. The glass bottle shattered against the granite stones yards away, the corrosive fluid hissing and eating instantly into the rock with a plume of white, acrid smoke.
Sophia hit the ground with a sickening thud, gasping for air.
Vincent didn't look at her. He spun around instantly, throwing himself between the hissing acid and where Claire and the children stood. His arms were spread wide, his entire body poised like a living shield, trembling with terror not for himself, but for them.
"Get back!" Vincent roared, his voice shaking the plaza. "Claire, take the children back!"
"Vincent..." Sophia groaned from the ground, clutching her bruised ribs, staring up at him with tears of disbelief. "Vincent... it’s me... you protected me... you always protect me..."
Vincent slowly turned around to look down at her.
The look in his eyes was something Claire had never seen in all the years she had known him. It was a cold, absolute, murderous hatred that transcended human rage.
"Don't speak my name," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly low, lethal rasp. "If you ever breathe near my wife or these children again, the police will be the least of your concerns."
Sirens wailed in the near distance. Four Chicago PD cruisers screeched onto the plaza, doors flying open as uniformed officers drew their weapons.
"Hands on your head! Don't move!"
Sophia began to weep hysterically, flailing on the ground like a broken doll as officers pinned her wrists behind her back, the cold steel of the handcuffs snapping shut around her delicate wrists.
"Vincent! Tell them! Vincent, I love you!" she wailed as they dragged her toward a cruiser. "I did it for us! She stood between us!"
Vincent did not spare her a single glance. He watched the police car door slam shut, severing her screams from the world.
Then, he turned slowly back toward Claire.
The rage completely vanished from his face, replaced by a devastating, pathetic vulnerability. He stood there, his expensive coat torn, his hands scraped and bleeding from tackling Sophia to the pavement.
He looked at Claire. Then he looked at Leo, whose small hands were clenched into fists, and at Maya, who was trembling slightly against her mother’s skirt.
Vincent slowly sank to his knees on the cold, hard stone of the plaza.

He didn't speak. He didn't make an excuse. In front of the gathering crowd, in front of the flashing phone cameras, in front of the city he had ruled with an iron fist, Vincent Moretti bowed his head to the ground, his shoulders shaking as silent, agonizing sobs tore through his body.
