Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The emergency room at OhioState University Wexner Medical Center was quiet and sterile.

By 9:00 PM, my wrist had been set in a fiberglass cast. The X-rays confirmed a hairline fracture along the radius bone, directly caused by the violent hyperextension when my fingers slipped off the wet pool tile.

I sat on the hospital bed, wearing a pair of grey scrubs the nurses had given me while my dress was bagged for police evidence.

The door opened, and a woman in a tailored black suit walked in, carrying a leather briefcase.

It was Evelyn Vance—one of Columbus’s premier family law attorneys and, coincidentally, the older sister of Officer Vance, who had recommended her while taking my statement at the scene.

"Claire," Evelyn said softly, setting her briefcase on the bedside table and pulling up a chair. "I’ve reviewed the preliminary police report and spoke with Officer Rodriguez. They’ve formally charged Ethan with misdemeanor domestic battery and assault. The security camera footage was pulled directly from Arthur Mercer’s server at 7:30 PM."

"Did you see it?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Evelyn nodded, her expression hardening with professional rage. "The video is unambiguous, Claire. It clearly shows him dragging you three paces, shoving you with both hands while you tried to pull away, and his mother clapping while you struggled in the water. Marcus Reed’s statement matches the video timestamp to the second."

I closed my eyes, taking a long, deep breath. Four years of emotional manipulation, subtle put-downs, and escalation had culminated in a 4K video recording that could not be twisted or denied.

"What happens now?" I asked.

"An emergency temporary protection order (TPO) has already been signed by the magistrate judge on call," Evelyn explained, pulling out a stack of documents. "Ethan is legally barred from coming within 500 feet of you, your workplace, or your primary residence at 142 Elm Street."

"He’ll claim the house is his," I noted. "His parents paid the down payment."

Evelyn smiled—a sharp, calculating smile that brought an immense sense of relief to my chest.

"That’s where Ethan made his biggest mistake," Evelyn said, leaning forward. "I spent the last hour running a preliminary title and asset search on 142 Elm Street. The down payment his parents provided four years ago? It wasn't a gift. They structured it as a private loan to Ethan, but you signed the primary mortgage deed as sole borrower because Ethan’s credit score was severely compromised by previous credit card debts."

I frowned, trying to recall the blur of paperwork from four years ago. "I thought we were joint owners."

"You are on the deed, but because Ethan transferred fifty thousand dollars from your joint savings account last year to cover his mother’s vanity boutique debt without your written consent, he committed material conversion of marital funds," Evelyn clarified. "We are filing for an emergency divorce petition tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, along with a motion for exclusive occupancy of the home and a freeze on all joint financial accounts."

My phone chimed on the table.

It was a text from an unknown number. I opened it.

UNKNOWN: Claire, it’s Ethan. I’m using Mom’s phone. Please drop the charges. Dad is furious. The firm’s HR department already called me because Marcus reported the incident to the managing partner. You’re destroying my career over a stupid prank! Call the prosecutor and tell them you made a mistake before this gets out of control!

I looked at the text, then handed the screen to Evelyn.

Evelyn took out her own phone, took a high-resolution photo of the screen, and unlocked her tablet.

"That's a direct violation of the Temporary Protection Order issued ninety minutes ago," Evelyn said smoothly. "Officer Rodriguez is going to love this."

She tapped her screen twice, routing the text directly to the lead detective on the case.

"Get some rest, Claire," Evelyn said, standing up and buttoning her jacket. "Tomorrow morning, the Mercers are going to find out what happens when you treat a strong woman like a servant."
