Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

One year later.
The springtime air over Charlotte was warm, filled with the scent of blooming dogwood trees and fresh jasmine.
Our backyard was filled with laughter, the soft clinking of glasses, and the warm, inviting aroma of a summer barbecue. We were celebrating three things: my promotion to Vice President of Regional Operations, Daniel’s thirty-sixth birthday, and the upcoming arrival of our first child—a baby girl, due in three months.
Arthur Vance sat in a wicker chair near the garden, holding a glass of iced tea, laughing with Daniel’s mother as they looked over nursery decoration catalogues.
I stood on the lawn wearing a comfortable yellow sundress, holding a glass of sparkling water, feeling the warm, strong kicks of my daughter beneath my hand.
Daniel walked up behind me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"What are you thinking about, mom-to-be?" he murmured into my hair.
I looked around our beautiful yard—at the loyal friends, the loving family, and the peaceful, secure home we had built together.
There were no frantic phone calls. There were no manipulative guilt trips. There were no demands for money masquerading as maternal love.
There was only peace.
"I was thinking about our daughter," I whispered, turning my head to press a gentle kiss to his cheek.
"Yeah? What about her?"
"I was thinking," I smiled, looking out at the golden sunlight streaming through the oak trees, "that when she grows up, I am going to teach her that love isn't something you have to buy, earn, or suffer for."
I rested my hand against my stomach, feeling another soft, miraculous kick from the little girl growing inside me.

"I'm going to teach her," I said, my voice rich with unbroken joy, "that she is loved simply because she exists."
Daniel pulled me closer, pressing his lips to my temple as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, everlasting light over the life we had chosen for ourselves.
