Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Ethan Caldwell

The presentation was a masterclass in modern engineering, and Claire dominated the room with a brilliance that left the municipal committee spellbound.

By the time she packed up her briefcase and walked out of the conference room, Ethan was in a state of professional and emotional shock. He dismissed his team with a wave of his hand, locked the conference room doors, and stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Chicago River.

He couldn't focus on the contract anymore. All he could think about was her.

Over the next two weeks, Ethan’s obsession returned with terrifying intensity. He threw himself into investigating Aegis Architectural & Engineering, pulling public filings, corporate registries, and real estate deeds.

What he found shattered his understanding of reality.

He discovered that Aegis had been founded exactly four years and two months ago—roughly eight months after the Halston Grand gala. He found records of commercial properties Claire had purchased independently. He found awards, accolades, and architectural journals praising her genius.

And then, while digging through a commercial real estate zoning permit filed by Aegis for a suburban residential development, Ethan spotted a line item that made his heart stop.

Emergency contact and minor dependent co-signers: Leo Bennett and Liam Bennett. Age: 4.

Ethan sat alone in his darkened office, the paper trembling in his hand.

Four years old.

Born in late spring. Exactly nine months after the night at the Halston Grand.

He did the math in his head, a cold wave of horror and realization washing over him. The night she had looked at him with tears in her eyes and said, “I was going to tell you something tonight.”

She hadn't been talking about a promotion. She hadn't been talking about moving in.

She had been pregnant.

He had a child.

Or children.

The word twins echoed in his mind like a gunshot.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He grabbed his car keys, bypassed three scheduled board meetings, and drove straight to the suburban address listed on the zoning permit—a stunning, modern architectural home in an exclusive Evanston neighborhood.
