Chapter 4 - The House of Smoke

By 10:30 p.m., the Caldwell estate was crawling with state investigators.

Filing cabinets were wheeled out of Richard’s home office in plastic bins. Hard drives were mirrored. The houseman and the maid were giving statements in the kitchen, their eyes wide with fear as they detailed the private conversations they had overheard over the past six months.

I stood outside on the marble veranda, wrapped in my wool coat, holding a paper cup of black coffee Daniel had brought me from the cruiser. The November air was sharp, smelling of damp oak leaves and approaching snow.

Daniel walked up beside me, leaning against the stone balustrade. “You did well, Claire. Your father would be unimaginably proud of your composure.”

“My hands haven't stopped shaking, Daniel,” I admitted, staring down at the paper cup.

“That’s just adrenaline leaving the bloodstream,” he said gently. “You’ve spent three months pretending to be their prey. It takes time for the body to realize you’re the hunter now.”

Behind us, the glass French doors opened. Ethan emerged, escorted by a deputy who remained ten paces back. Ethan’s tie was loosened, his hair disheveled. He looked twenty years older.

“Claire,” he said, his voice cracked and hollow. “Can we please speak alone? Five minutes. That’s all I’m asking.”

I looked at Daniel, who nodded slightly, stepping back toward the entryway to give me space while keeping his eyes on Ethan.

I turned to my husband. “You have two minutes, Ethan.”

He stepped closer, reaching out to touch my hand, but I pulled it away and dropped it into my coat pocket. He winced.

“Claire, listen to me,” he whispered urgently. “You have to drop the charges against Mom. She’s sixty-four years old! She has hypertension! She won’t survive a night in county jail!”

“She seemed energetic enough when she was trying to drag me by my hair across the floor,” I replied evenly.

“That wasn't her! She was panicked! Claire, Dad made us do it!” Ethan’s voice took on a sickening, desperate whine. “You don't understand the debt Caldwell Enterprises was in! Dad over-leveraged the shipping yards in Jersey. We were facing bankruptcy three years ago. When your father died, Dad realized the Sterling patents could secure a forty-million-dollar credit facility from Chase. If we didn't absorb those assets, our entire family would have been out on the street!”

I stared at him, feeling an overwhelming wave of disgust. “So you married me as a business acquisition?”

“No! I loved you! I swear to God I loved you, Claire!”

“Then why was Evelyn Cross on the manifest for your trip to Chicago last week?”

Ethan stopped breathing. His jaw dropped, his eyes bulging. “How… how did you—”

“Apex Horizon didn't just hold the stolen $2.8 million,” I said, leaning in so only he could hear my words. “It also paid the lease on a three-bedroom penthouse overlooking Lincoln Park in Chicago. Registered under Evelyn Cross’s name. Your father’s chief financial officer’s twenty-six-year-old daughter. Did you really think Daniel wouldn't audit every wire transfer leaving that account?”

Ethan took a step back, as though struck across the face. “Claire… it’s not what you think…”

“You stole my father’s life work to keep your family from drowning,” I said, each word hitting him like an icy hammer. “And then you used his money to fund a luxury love nest for your mistress. And tonight, you told me to kneel on broken glass.”

I took a slow breath, feeling the last lingering trace of affection I had ever harbored for him evaporate into the winter night.

“You’re going to lose everything, Ethan. Your trust fund. Your company. Your freedom. And when you finally crawl out of whatever federal penitentiary they send you to, Evelyn Cross won't be waiting for you. Because Daniel already froze the Chicago lease three hours ago. She’s currently packing her bags with FBI agents standing in the hallway.”

Ethan fell against the stone pillar, his knees visibly buckling. “Claire… please. What do you want? Tell me what you want!”

“I want you to sign the divorce papers on my terms,” I said. “And then I want you out of my life forever.”

May you like

Without waiting for his answer, I turned my back on him and walked down the steps, leaving him shivering in the dark.
