Chapter 4 - The Noon Meeting

The downtown café was crowded with the lunch-hour corporate crowd. Glass tables, artisanal sandwiches, the hiss of espresso machines.

Priscilla was already seated in a corner booth when I arrived at twelve sharp. She had traded her emerald blouse for an understated, tasteful beige cashmere sweater. She looked every bit the concerned, elegant suburban wife. In front of her sat an untouched iced latte and a sleek leather folio.

When she saw me walk through the door, she immediately stood up, her face melting into an expression of profound empathy.

"Oh, Desmond," she sighed, throwing her arms around my neck as I reached the booth. She smelled of jasmine perfume—the scent I used to associate with coming home after a long day. Now, it made my skin crawl. "You look completely exhausted. Did you sleep at all?"

"Not much," I said, letting my shoulders slump as I slid into the booth opposite her. I rubbed my eyes, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh. "It was a rough night, Priscilla. Mom was... disoriented. She kept asking what happened to the cake. She didn't even remember the hospital."

A spark of triumphant satisfaction flashed behind Priscilla’s eyes before she quickly masked it with a furrowed brow.

"I knew it," she murmured, reaching across the table to cover my hands with her own. Her fingers were warm, perfectly manicured. "I knew it, baby. It's getting worse so fast. That's why the cake thing was so terrifying for me. She got so confused, and then she stumbled, and... God, Desmond, what if next time she leaves the gas stove on while you're at the office? What if she burns the whole house down with herself inside it?"

"I know," I muttered, staring down at the wooden table. "You were right. I was just in denial. It's hard to admit that your own mother can't take care of herself anymore."

"Of course it is, sweetheart," she said soothingly, stroking my knuckles. "Nobody blames you. You're a wonderful son. But you can't be a full-time caregiver. You have a business to run. We have our future to think about."

She tapped the leather folio sitting next to her cup.

"Julian worked all night on this," she whispered, leaning closer. "He prepared a comprehensive conservatorship and durable power of attorney package. It grants you and me joint legal and financial guardianship over Eleanor's affairs. Once this is signed, we can immediately liquidate the Maplewood property and transfer the capital into a protected trust managed by Julian's firm. That money will pay for the absolute best tier-one memory care suite at Oakridge Manor. She'll have nurses around the clock, private gardens, gourmet meals..."

"And the upstate land?" I asked quietly.

"Julian recommends selling that too," Priscilla said without missing a beat. "Land that sits idle just accumulates property taxes. We fold everything into the trust. It simplifies everything, Desmond. It protects your inheritance, and it ensures Eleanor lives out her days in luxury."

*She lives out her days in a locked ward, while you and Vance drain the trust dry,* I thought.

"Does Mom have to sign these?" I asked, gesturing toward the folio.

"Julian said it's much cleaner if she signs the voluntary conveyance before we file the medical competency petition," Priscilla replied, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "If she signs willingly in front of a licensed notary, the court approves the conservatorship in forty-eight hours without a lengthy psychiatric hearing. It avoids all the embarrassment."

"She was pretty upset with you last night, Priscilla. About the cake."

Priscilla waved a dismissive hand. "She won't even remember being angry by tonight. But I have an idea. Let's make it up to her. Let's invite Aunt Clara, Uncle Robert, and the cousins back over to Eleanor's house tomorrow evening. I'll cater a gorgeous, gentle dinner. No pranks, no loud music. I will personally apologize to Eleanor in front of everyone, present her with a new, beautiful birthday gift, and we can announce that we are all taking this step together as a loving family."

It was breathtaking how effortlessly the lies flowed from her lips. She wanted the family there as witnesses to Eleanor signing the papers—an audience of respectable relatives to validate that Eleanor had signed voluntarily, without coercion.

"That's... actually a wonderful idea," I said, forcing a faint, grateful smile to my face. "An apology dinner. It would heal a lot of wounds."

"Really?" Priscilla’s face lit up with genuine delight. The trap was closing, but she thought she was the hunter. "You don't think it's too soon?"

"No," I said. "The sooner we resolve this, the sooner we can breathe again. Tell Julian to bring the papers and a mobile notary tomorrow at seven. We'll have dinner, and then we'll handle the paperwork in the study."

"You're amazing, Desmond," she said, leaning across the table to kiss my cheek.

Her lips felt like ice against my skin.

"I'll take care of everything," she promised, picking up her purse. "I'll order the catering from that French bistro Eleanor loves. I'll call the family. All you have to do is make sure your mother is rested and calm."

"I'll make sure she's ready," I replied.

I watched Priscilla walk out of the café, her head held high, her stride bouncy with the intoxicating rush of impending victory.

As soon as she was out of sight, I pulled out my phone and dialed Marcus.

"She took the bait," I said.

"Good," Marcus replied on the other end. "Detective Miller from the Financial Crimes Division just reviewed the cloud footage and the bank transfers. He’s securing a search warrant for Vance's office as we speak. But he wants the arrest made on-site, in flagrante delicto, when Vance produces the fraudulent documents and attempts to execute the notarization."

"Will Miller be there tomorrow?"

"He'll be outside in an unmarked cruiser," Marcus said. "Along with two uniformed officers. When you give the signal, they come through the front door."

"What signal?"

May you like

Marcus paused. "When your mother cuts the cake."
