Chapter 4 - The Legal Checkmate

The divorce and criminal proceedings moved with the speed of an avalanche.

Owen tried every desperate trick in the book. He hired high-priced defense lawyers who claimed the tea packet had been planted, that his bank transfers to Vanessa were “consulting fees,” and that his late-night trysts were just the result of work-related stress.

He even tried to sue for visitation rights to our newborn son, Leo.

He didn't realize who he was fighting.

Not only did I have the audio recordings of him lying to me while in bed with Vanessa while my water broke, but Richard Prescott had opened the full financial vaults of Hawthorne Health Network to support my legal team. Every shady real estate deal, every falsified prescription log, and every hidden asset Owen had accumulated over the years was laid bare before family court judge Evelyn Vance.

Two months after Leo’s birth, the final hearing took place in downtown Pittsburgh.

Owen sat at the defense table, wearing a standard orange-trimmed county jumpsuit, his trial having been expedited due to the severity of the federal wire fraud and medical tampering charges. He looked defeated, his hair unstyled, his expensive tailored suits replaced by the uniform of a criminal defendant.

I sat across the aisle, flanked by Richard Prescott and my legal counsel. In my arms, little Leo slept peacefully, swaddled in a soft blue blanket, completely safe from the monsters who had once plotted against him.

Judge Vance adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench with severe judicial authority.

“In my thirty years on the bench,” Judge Vance announced, her voice ringing crystal clear through the courtroom, “I have rarely encountered a more calculated, sociopathic betrayal of marital trust and medical ethics. Dr. Owen Prescott used his position as a maternal-fetal specialist not to heal, but to harm. Not to protect his family, but to exploit them.”

She struck her gavel twice.

“The court grants full, sole legal and physical custody of the minor child to Natalie Mercer. All parental rights of the defendant are hereby terminated with prejudice. Furthermore, the defendant is sentenced to twenty-five years in federal and state correctional facilities without the possibility of parole.”

Owen buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, muffled sob as bailiffs stepped forward to cuff his wrists and lead him away from the courtroom forever.
