Chapter 4 - The Court-Martial & Federal Trial

Six weeks later.
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia was packed to absolute capacity.
Sitting at the defense table was Linda, wearing an orange federal inmate jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face pale and sunken, looking around the courtroom with wide, terrified eyes. Beside her sat her court-appointed public defender, looking thoroughly exhausted by his client's constant, hysterical demands.
Sitting beside her at a separate defense table was Arthur, wearing a plain gray suit, his posture completely defeated.
Sitting at the prosecution table alongside the Assistant United States Attorney was me, wearing my pristine dress uniform, my Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge pinned proudly over my left chest. Sitting in the gallery behind me were General Hayes, Thomas Vance, and twenty soldiers from my deployed unit.
Judge Eleanor Hayes—a formidable federal judge—rapped her heavy wooden gavel against the block.
"United States versus Linda Vance and Arthur Vance," Judge Hayes announced, her sharp voice echoing clearly across the room. "The court is ready for sentencing following the defendants' formal guilty pleas to Felony Assault, Grand Larceny, and Federal Wire Fraud."
The Assistant US Attorney stood up, opening a black litigation binder.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor spoke, "the defense has requested leniency based on claims of 'domestic stress.' We submit that the evidence demonstrates a twenty-year pattern of systemic emotional abuse, financial theft, and a brutal, unprovoked physical assault on an active-duty officer performing her official duties."
The prosecutor pressed a button on his podium.
The high-definition courtroom projector lit up, playing the viral video of the ceremony on the wall screen:
SCREEN: The Purple Heart being pinned to my uniform.
SCREEN: Linda rushing the stage from the side wing, clutching the steel chair.
SCREEN: CRACK. The chair slamming across my left arm; the medal hitting the floor.
SCREEN: Linda screaming: "You're still trash in a costume!"
SCREEN: General Hayes stepping between us, declaring: "She is not trash."
The jurors and gallery members sat in absolute, heavy silence.
Judge Hayes lowered her reading glasses, looking down from her bench at Linda with a look of terrifying, cold disgust.
"Mrs. Vance," Judge Hayes spoke, her voice dropping into an ironclad register. "You stood in a military auditorium surrounded by three hundred heroes and attempted to physically destroy a decorated captain because you could not stomach the fact that she had risen above your cruelty."
Judge Hayes raised her pen, signing the formal sentencing decrees with sharp, decisive strokes:
Linda Vance: Sentenced to Eighteen Years in Federal Prison without parole, plus $1.2 million in mandatory restitution to Thomas Vance.
Arthur Vance: Sentenced to Ten Years in Federal Prison, with full asset forfeiture of the Virginia estate and all corporate accounts.
Chad Vance: Ordered to pay $85,000 in disgorged tuition funds and sentenced to two years of federal probation for accomplice fraud.
Linda let out a sharp, choked shriek, her knees giving out completely as she collapsed onto the defense table, weeping hysterically while two armed federal marshals grabbed her arms and led her out in waist chains.
Arthur lowered his head onto his arms, weeping soundlessly, as he was led out behind her.

I stood up from the prosecution table, adjusted my uniform jacket, and shook the prosecutor's hand.
The twenty-year nightmare was officially, legally over.
