Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps

"This is ridiculous!" Gloria shrieked, her voice cracking with frantic desperation as she grabbed her lawyer's arm. "Raymond, tell them! Tell them Arthur signed those papers in front of you!"
Raymond Miller looked at the four police officers, then at Detective Jenkins, and completely broke. He sank into his chair, wiping cold sweat from his forehead with a trembling hand.
"I... I can't do this, Gloria," Miller whispered, his voice shaking. "They have the hospital security logs. They have the video of us walking into his room when he was sedated."
"Shut up, Raymond! Shut your mouth!" Darren yelled, stepping toward Miller with a raised fist.
Before Darren could lay a hand on him, two state troopers grabbed Darren’s arms, forced his hands behind his back, and slammed him face-down onto the mahogany conference table.
CLICK. CLICK.
The sharp, metallic sound of handcuffs locking around Darren’s wrists echoed through the silent room.
"Darren Vance," Detective Jenkins announced loudly, pulling a white paper from her coat. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, forgery, and elder financial abuse."
"Mom! Mom, do something!" Darren screamed, his face pressed flat against the polished wood. "Call our lawyer!"
Gloria scrambled out of her chair, backing away toward the window, her eyes wide with animal terror.
"I... I didn't do anything!" Gloria whimpered, holding her manicured hands up in self-defense. "It was all Darren! He forged the papers! He made me do it! I was just taking care of my sick husband!"
I walked slowly down the length of the conference table, stopping just two feet from where Gloria stood trapped against the glass.
I pulled my phone from my pocket, tapped the screen, and played the recording from four days ago:
“I married a man. Not a burden... And don’t come crawling back. By tomorrow, your father’s accounts will be handled properly. He already signed what we needed.”
The crisp audio filled the boardroom. The bank representatives shook their heads in utter disgust; the buyer's attorney closed his laptop in silence.
"You threw my father out into a sub-zero blizzard in his slippers, Gloria," I said softly, my voice as cold as the snow outside. "You thought he had no voice left. You thought I was a broke, helpless girl you could push into the mud."
I looked at Detective Jenkins. "Serve her."
Detective Jenkins stepped forward, pulling a second set of handcuffs from her utility belt.
"Gloria Vance," Jenkins said firmly. "You are under arrest for aggravated elder abuse, financial endangerment, forgery, and criminal fraud."
As the steel cuffs snapped tightly around Gloria’s wrists, her silk robe collar crumpled, her pearl necklace caught on her coat, and her red lipstick smeared across her chin as she began to sob hysterically.
"Arthur! Please!" Gloria wailed, throwing herself toward my father's feet as the officers dragged her toward the door. "Arthur, tell them you love me! Tell them it was a mistake! I’m your wife!"

My father stood tall, resting both hands on his silver-headed cane. He looked down at the woman who had tried to destroy his life, his health, and his family.
"You were never my wife, Gloria," Dad said quietly, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "You were just a cold winter that has finally passed."
