Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later.

The mountain spring had arrived in Fairview, washing away the bitter winter snow and replacing it with vibrant fields of wildflowers, green pine forests, and warm, golden sunlight that flooded the valley.

The sprawling cedar-and-glass fortress on Timberline Ridge was no longer just a secret tech hub; it was our home—a sanctuary built on strength, mutual respect, and absolute freedom.

The textile plant downtown was thriving under my direct leadership, having just secured a multi-year global supply contract with Vance Industrial Holdings, cementing our financial independence for generations to come.

As for my family?

My father had attempted to contact me several times through intermediaries, begging for financial assistance to pay his mounting legal fees and rental arrears. Victoria and Heather had fled to Florida, desperately trying to latch onto another wealthy mark to fund their shallow social aspirations, completely ignoring my father in his hour of need.

I never answered their calls. I never opened their letters.

Some bridges aren't meant to be rebuilt; sometimes, the fire that burns them down clears the way for something infinitely better to grow.

On a bright, crystal-clear Saturday morning, Liam and I stood together on the wide wrap-around wooden deck of our mountain home, looking out over the endless, breathtaking expanse of the evergreen canopy stretching out toward the horizon.

Liam wore a simple flannel shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, holding a freshly brewed cup of coffee. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched a hawk soar effortlessly across the clear blue sky.

My phone buzzed gently in the pocket of my cardigan.

I pulled it out. It was a calendar notification for a date I no longer feared, a memory that no longer held any power to hurt me.

With a calm, deliberate motion, I tapped the screen, selected Delete, and watched the reminder vanish forever.

I didn't need reminders of the past.

I had the present, I had my purpose, and I had the man who had walked out of the forest to help me burn down my cages.

I turned around in Liam’s arms, wrapped my hands around his neck, and kissed him with all the love, strength, and gratitude in my heart.

The horizon ahead of us was bright, endless, and entirely unbroken.
