Chapter 2 - The Glass House at Dawn

The morning sun over Bel-Air rose in a brilliant, cloudless sky of pale blue and gold, casting warm light across the manicured hedges and white limestone walls of 10424 Bellagio Road.

Inside the master suite of the eighteen-million-dollar estate, Julian Vance rolled over on his silk sheets, holding his forehead with a groan. His head throbbed with a vicious hangover from the three bottles of vintage Dom Pérignon he and his friends had consumed after his mother left.

Beside him, Chloe was lounging in her silk robe, scrolling through her phone, checking the social media comments on the photos from last night’s party.

"God, my head hurts," Julian muttered, sitting up and rubbing his face. "What time is it?"

"It’s almost seven," Chloe replied absently, not looking up from her screen. "Your mother was so dramatic last night, Julian. Honestly, the way she just walked out without even clearing her plate. She really knows how to ruin a mood."

Julian frowned, a brief, uncomfortable flicker of memory flashing through his mind—the sound of his fist striking flesh, the sight of his sixty-eight-year-old mother standing perfectly still against the dining room wall, counting out loud under her breath.

One. Two. Three...

Julian pushed the thought away, shaking his head. "She'll get over it. She always does. She'll call me by noon, apologize for making a scene in front of the board members from Miller & Croft, and send over a catering crew to clean up the mess."

"She better," Chloe sniffed, adjusting her diamond ring. "The caterers left all the dirty glassware on the patio, and I'm not touching it. Tell her to pay for the deep-cleaning crew too."

Julian pulled his phone off the nightstand to check his emails.

He tapped the screen to open his primary banking application—the account he used to pay for his custom suits, Chloe’s monthly allowance at Saks Fifth Avenue, and the maintenance fees for his leased Italian sports cars.

A bright red notification box flashed across the screen:

[ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED — CONTACT PRIMARY TRUSTEE]

Julian blinked, rubbing his eyes. "What the hell?"

He refreshed the app. The screen flashed red again.

He opened his secondary account at City National Bank.

[ACCOUNT FROZEN — LEGAL HOLD ATTACHED]

"Chloe," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as a cold knot tightened in his throat. "Did you touch the master card this morning?"

"No," Chloe said, finally looking up from her phone. "Why?"

"My banking apps are glitched," Julian muttered, throwing off the duvet and walking toward his walk-in closet to grab a shirt. "It’s probably just a system update. The trust department always does maintenance on the first of the month."

Before he could reach the closet door, a heavy, thunderous knock echoed from the grand front entrance downstairs.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Who is that at seven in the morning?" Chloe complained, tying her robe tightly around her waist. "Did the coffee delivery finally get here?"

Julian walked down the floating marble staircase, his feet bare against the cold travertine floor. The grand foyer was forty feet high, illuminated by a three-thousand-pound crystal chandelier that his mother had personally imported from Venice four years ago.

He walked up to the heavy ten-foot oak front doors and pulled one open.

Standing on the limestone porch were four uniformed Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by two men in sharp black suits carrying leather document portfolios. Behind them, parked along the circular driveway, were three black law enforcement SUVs and a white utility van bearing the logo WESTSIDE LOCK & KEY.

Julian froze. "Can I... can I help you officers?"

The lead deputy, a broad-shouldered man with silver hair and a stern face, pulled a thick sheaf of paper from his belt.

"Julian Vance?" the deputy asked.

"Yes?"

"I am Sergeant Miller with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department," the deputy stated, his voice booming into the grand foyer. "I am serving you with a formal Notice of Immediate Administrative Eviction and Property Seizure under Civil Writ #8092."

Julian let out a nervous, forced laugh, waving his hand. "Officers, there’s been a mistake. This is my house. I'm Julian Vance. My mother bought this house for me five years ago."

"Correction, Mr. Vance," one of the men in suits stepped forward, pulling a gold-stamped corporate certificate from his portfolio. "My name is David Sterling, lead asset manager for Vance Heritage Global LLC. This property is the exclusive asset of the Vance Heritage Trust. As of 12:01 AM this morning, your occupancy agreement has been formally revoked due to a material breach of Clause 7."

"Clause 7?!" Julian shouted, his face turning pale. "What the hell are you talking about Clause 7?!"

"Clause 7, Paragraph B," David Sterling read calmly from the document. "Revocation of residential privilege following physical assault committed against the Settlor, Dr. Margaret Vance."

Chloe came gliding down the marble stairs, her silk robe trailing behind her. "Julian, what is going on? Why are these men in our foyer?"

"Ma'am," Sergeant Miller said, turning his head toward her. "You and Mr. Vance have thirty minutes to gather your personal medications, identification, and a single suit of clothing. At 7:30 AM, this property will be sealed by court order."

"Thirty minutes?!" Chloe shrieked, her voice pitching into a high, hysterical squeak. "Are you insane?! Do you have any idea who my father is?! Do you have any idea how much this furniture costs?!"

"The furniture belongs to the trust, Mrs. Vance," David Sterling corrected her coldly. "Every painting, every piece of silver, every rug, and every wine bottle in that cellar was purchased by Dr. Margaret Vance. You own nothing in this house except the clothes currently hanging in your closet."

Julian took a step toward David Sterling, his hands clenching into fists, his eyes bloodshot with rage. "You tell my mother to get down here right now! Tell her to stop playing these ridiculous legal games! She can't kick me out of my own home!"

Sergeant Miller immediately unclipped the safety strap on his holster, stepping between Julian and the asset manager.

"Mr. Vance," Sergeant Miller warned, his voice dropping into a low, lethal quiet. "I suggest you back up. If you raise your hands or step toward Mr. Sterling again, I will arrest you immediately under the outstanding felony warrant issued by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office forty minutes ago."

Julian stopped as if he had been hit by an electric shock.

"W-warrant?" Julian choked out, his throat going bone dry. "What warrant?"

"Felony Domestic Battery with Great Bodily Injury," Sergeant Miller replied, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Dr. Margaret Vance filed a formal criminal complaint at midnight. Her medical examination confirmed a split lip, severe facial hematomas, and a fractured left cheekbone."

Julian’s knees actually buckled. He grabbed the marble doorframe to keep from falling onto the floor.

"She... she went to the police?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine. "My mom... went to the police on me?"

"You have twenty-eight minutes remaining, Mr. Vance," Sergeant Miller said, checking his wrist watch. "I suggest you start packing."
