Chapter 3 - The Knock on the Marble Door

At 11:30 AM that same morning, Amber Reeves was in the sprawling master bathroom of 4420 Willowcreek Lane, wearing a silk robe and sipping an iced matcha latte.

The house was quiet. Brandon had left for his office at the private equity firm in downtown Houston around 8:30 AM, still riding the high of the previous night’s "triumph." Before leaving, he had kissed Amber on the forehead, laughing about how my face looked when his hand caught my cheek.

*"The old man won't dare show his face in River Oaks again,"* Brandon had declared, fixing his silk tie in the grand mirror. *"He finally learned who holds the cards."*

Amber had spent the morning posting photos of the birthday party on her social media. She had carefully cropped out the moment Brandon slapped me, choosing instead to showcase the crystal decanters, the floral centerpieces, and a flattering portrait of herself beneath the caption: *“Another year of building our empire together at Willowcreek Manor.”*

Her phone pinged with comments from her friends, showering her with praise, envy, and adoration.

She turned on the water to fill the deep marble soaking tub, humming a tune to herself. She had an appointment at a luxury spa on Westheimer at 1:30 PM, followed by lunch with two partners' wives.

Downstairs, the heavy iron front doors rattled under the force of three sharp, thunderous knocks.

*BANG. BANG. BANG.*

Amber frowned, pausing her phone scrolling. She pulled her silk robe tighter around her waist and walked out to the grand curved staircase that overlooked the double-height foyer.

"Consuelo?" Amber called out, expecting the housekeeper. Then she remembered Consuelo didn't come on Wednesdays.

*BANG. BANG. BANG.*

The knocks were not the polite rings of a FedEx driver or a neighborhood visitor. They were authoritative, heavy, and demanded an immediate response.

Irritated, Amber descended the marble stairs, her bare feet slapping against the polished stone. "Hold on! Stop banging on the damn door like animals!" she shouted, wrenching the heavy iron door open.

"What is your—"

The words died in her throat.

Standing on the limestone porch were two uniformed Harris County Sheriff's deputies, their hands resting comfortably near their duty belts. Flanking them was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal suit holding a thick leather clipboard, and behind them, parked along the circular driveway, were two massive white commercial moving trucks and four private security guards in black tactical vests.

"Mrs. Amber Reeves?" the man in the charcoal suit asked, his voice crisp and devoid of warmth.

Amber blinked, stepping back a half-inch, her heart stuttering. "Yes... who the hell are you? What is this?"

"My name is Leonard Ross," the man said, flipping a page on his clipboard. "I represent Kane Infrastructure & Capital Holdings. As of 11:48 AM this morning, this property has been purchased and officially transferred to our entity. The previous lease agreement between Redwood Capital LLC and the occupants has been terminated under emergency order."

Amber stared at him, then let out a sharp, nervous laugh. "Are you insane? Is this a joke? My husband Brandon Reeves owns this house! We’ve lived here for five years!"

"Ma'am," Deputy Miller, an older officer with a silver mustache, stepped forward. "We have the certified warranty deed from the county clerk, signed forty minutes ago by the managing owner of Redwood Capital LLC, Franklin Reeves. We also have a court-recognized notice of immediate possession."

The name *Franklin Reeves* hit Amber like a blast of freezing wind.

"No... no, Franklin is my father-in-law!" she stammered, her voice rising an octave, shrill and frantic. "He gave us this house! He doesn't have the right to do this! He's senile! We had an incident last night—"

"Ma'am," Deputy Miller interrupted, his voice dropping into that immovable, professional tone of Texas law enforcement. "Who owns the house is a matter for civil litigation. But right now, the registered legal owner on the deed is Kane Infrastructure, and their representative has requested an immediate clear-out of trespassers. You have thirty minutes to collect your immediate personal effects—clothing, medications, essential documents. After thirty minutes, the locksmiths will rekey the exterior doors, and the moving crew will catalog and box all remaining contents for transport to a licensed bonded warehouse."

"Bonded warehouse?!" Amber screamed, her face draining of all color. "Do you know who my husband is? He’s a senior director at Blackwood Capital! You cannot touch our things! This is private property!"

"Ma'am, it is private property," Leonard Ross replied calmly. "It's Mr. Kane's private property. And you are currently trespassing."

Behind them, three men in grey uniforms stepped out of the moving vans carrying stacks of heavy cardboard boxes, rolls of bubble wrap, and rolls of bright orange tape.

Two locksmiths carrying heavy toolboxes were already walking toward the side gate to rekey the garage and service entries.

"Get off my porch! Don't you dare step inside this house!" Amber shrieked, trying to slam the iron door shut.

Deputy Miller’s boot stepped firmly into the door jamb, stopping it cold.

"Mrs. Reeves, do not attempt to barricade this door," Miller warned, his hand moving to his side. "If you refuse to cooperate, you will be placed under arrest for interfering with the execution of a lawful property order and criminal trespass. You have twenty-eight minutes remaining. I suggest you go upstairs and pack your purse."

Amber looked at the deputies, then at the orange eviction notice Leonard Ross was already peeling from a sheet, slapping it directly across the glass panel of the front door with a loud *thwack*.

**NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE VACATE AND POSSESSION TURNOVER.**

Tears of pure, unadulterated panic surged into Amber’s eyes. Her hands shook violently as she reached into the pocket of her robe, pulled out her phone, and dialed Brandon’s direct line.

Downstairs, the moving crew began walking in through the open double doors, laying down protective blue neoprene runners over the newly refinished white oak floors.
