Chapter 6 - A Brand New Chapter

Six months after our wedding day, the autumn leaves in Pittsburgh turned brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold.
Caleb and I hosted a small dinner party in our newly renovated backyard. The patio string lights glowed warmly over a long wooden table surrounded by our truest friends—including June, who was currently laughing hysterically at one of Caleb’s terrible dad jokes.
I sat at the end of the table, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and jeans, sipping a glass of crisp white wine.
There were no cameras recording my every move to mock me later. There were no anonymous text messages buzzing in my pocket. There was no sister waiting in the shadows to tear down whatever joy I managed to build.
There was only warmth, laughter, and a profound, unshakable love.
Later that evening, after the guests had gone home and the patio was quiet, Caleb and I stood side by side cleaning up the wine glasses.
He wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over our backyard.
“You know,” Caleb murmured softly, “we never did get professional wedding photos in your original dress.”
I leaned back against his chest, smiling into the cool autumn air.
“That’s okay,” I whispered, turning around to wrap my arms around his neck. “I like the photos we have much better. They show what happens when the fake things burn away, and only the real thing is left standing.”

Caleb kissed me—deeply, tenderly, and with all the promise of a future that belonged entirely to us.
The black dye had tried to stain my story, but it had only served to highlight the bright, beautiful colors of the life I had finally chosen for myself. And as we walked back inside together, closing the door on the crisp night air, I knew the best chapters were still waiting to be written.
