Chapter 18 - The Boardroom Raid

The review meeting took place in a conference room at a naval administrative building.

Elena arrived with her attorney and a carefully organized file of documents. Commander Bennett and two other officials sat across the table.

No one called it a raid, although Daniel later described it that way to his employees.

It was a formal review of the materials his company had submitted.

The officials began with the consultation summary.

They asked Daniel's representative to identify the document's author, its approval process, and the basis for associating Elena's name with the product.

The representative explained that several employees and outside contractors had contributed to the proposal.

The digital approval marker, he said, was still being examined.

Elena listened without interrupting.

Then Commander Bennett placed a copy of Elena's old email on the table.

I cannot recommend equipment I have not independently examined and tested.

“Does the company dispute the authenticity of this message?” Bennett asked.

Daniel's representative examined it.

“Not at this stage.”

“Does it indicate that Ms. Alden approved the product?”

“No.”

“Does the company possess a separate written authorization?”

“We are reviewing our records.”

The meeting continued for nearly two hours.

Officials requested the original files, relevant communications, and records identifying who had handled the submission.

They made it clear that no final conclusion had been reached.

Elena was asked to describe her interactions with Daniel and to confirm that she had never tested the equipment.

She answered each question carefully.

She did not speculate about his intentions.

She did not discuss her sister's behavior unless asked.

Her concern was simple: the documentation should accurately reflect what she had done and what she had not done.

At the end of the meeting, Bennett walked with her into the corridor.

“You were clear and consistent,” she said.

“Does that mean the document was falsified?”

“No. It means we have evidence that your authorization has not been established. The technical review must determine how the document was created and who was responsible.”

Elena nodded.

“Thank you for clarifying.”

Outside the building, she found a message from Marin.

Daniel says you attacked him in front of his own team.

Elena typed a response.

I answered questions about a document bearing my name. That is all.

Marin replied immediately.

You know what this will do to us.

Elena looked at the message for several seconds.

Then she put the phone away.

She could no longer organize her life around preventing her family from experiencing consequences.

The review was not an attack.

It was a process designed to establish facts.

And the facts, whatever they proved, had to be allowed to speak.
