Chapter 4 - The Aftershocks

If my family had expected me to slink away in shame and call begging for forgiveness by Monday morning, they fundamentally misunderstood the woman they had spent thirty years trying to exploit.

Monday at 8:00 AM, my phone began vibrating incessantly on my nightstand.

I ignored it while I sipped my coffee, watching the morning sunlight filter through the tall windows of our penthouse apartment. By 9:00 AM, the text messages started pouring in:

Mom: How could you do this to your own flesh and blood? Chloe is throwing up in the bathroom from morning sickness and you’ve cut off our credit! Call me immediately!

Dad: Victoria, we need to talk about the Mercedes lease. The dealership just called saying the automatic payment failed. This is going to ruin my professional reputation in town.

Chloe: You ruined my life! Because of your stupid corporate travel rules, I had to pay eight hundred dollars to change my ticket to Cleveland, and my morning sickness flared up on a middle seat next to a guy who smelled like cheese puffs! I hate you!

I calmly selected all three threads, clicked Block Contact, and archived the conversations.

Ten minutes later, my office landline buzzed. My executive assistant, Sarah, picked up and buzzed me through the intercom.

"Victoria? You have a visitor in the lobby. It’s your father. He says it’s an emergency."

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "Send him up, Sarah. Let’s get this over with."

Five minutes later, my father walked into my corner office. He looked ten years older than he had at the wedding. His shoulders were slumped, his tie was loose, and the arrogant swagger that had defined his authority throughout my childhood was completely gone.

He didn't sit down in the leather guest chair. He stood awkwardly by the door, holding his fedora in both hands, twisting the brim.

"Victoria," he began, his voice raspy and subdued. "Your mother hasn't stopped crying since Saturday night. And Chloe... Chloe is threatening to move back into our house with the baby because she has no money for rent."

"That sounds like a wonderful family bonding opportunity, Dad," I said smoothly, not looking up from my laptop keyboard where I was reviewing the quarterly event budget.

"Victoria, please," Arthur swallowed hard, taking a hesitant step forward. "We are your family. I know... I know we’ve made mistakes. I know we’ve leaned on you too heavily over the years. But cutting us off completely? Letting my car get repossessed? That’s harsh even for you."

I stopped typing. I slowly lifted my head, locking my eyes onto his.

"Dad, let’s be entirely clear about something," I said, my voice cold, calm, and absolute. "For thirty years, you taught me that love in this family was a transaction. You taught me that my worth was measured entirely by how much money, time, and emotional labor I could sacrifice to keep Chloe comfortable and your ego intact."

Arthur flinched.

"I spent my entire youth believing that if I just worked harder, achieved more, and gave away a little bit more of myself, you would finally look at me with the same pride you reserved for Chloe," I continued, standing up from my executive desk and walking around to face him. "Saturday night was the breaking point. You didn't just ruin my wedding reception—you proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you view me not as a daughter, but as an ATM with legs."

"That's not true..." he whispered weakly.

"It is entirely true," I replied. "And the free ride is permanently over. You want the Mercedes lease paid? Pay it yourself. You want Chloe to have an apartment? Let her get a job, or let her baby daddy step up. As for me? I am officially locking down my accounts, changing my phone number, and building a life with a man who actually respects me."

My father stared at me, the final, pathetic remnants of his parental authority crumbling away into dust. He opened his mouth to argue, found no words left in his arsenal, and slowly turned around.

Without another word, he walked out of my office, closing the glass door softly behind him.
