Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Family Trust

By 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the news of the engagement party disaster had swept through high-society circles and regional military networks like a wildfire.
GENERAL'S WIDOW ARRESTED AT DAUGHTER'S ENGAGEMENT PARTY FOR EXTORTION AND ASSAULT.
DAUGHTER REVEALED AS HIGH-RANKING SPECIAL FORCES OFFICER.
I sat in the high-rise downtown office of my personal estate attorney, Sarah Sterling, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea. Standing beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline was Ethan, wearing his crisp Army dress uniform, holding a tablet.
Sarah Sterling—a formidable fifty-year-old estate litigator who had managed my father's military trust for a decade—flipped through a thick blue binder on her mahogany desk.
"Natalie," Sarah spoke, her voice sharp, professional, and entirely focused. "Following the arrests on Saturday night, my office executed a full forensic audit of the secondary family estate accounts held by your mother, Evelyn, over the last seven years."
"What did you find, Sarah?" I asked, setting my teacup down.
Sarah slid a financial ledger across the desk toward me.
"Your father's primary survivor compensation fund—the $3.2 million assigned directly to your private trust—is completely untouched and legally unassailable," Sarah reported cleanly. "However... we discovered that over the last four years, Evelyn systematically embezzled $420,000 from your father's secondary educational trust, which was intended to fund scholarships for children of fallen soldiers."
My chest tightened. "She stole from the fallen soldiers fund?"
"She funneled every single dollar of it directly into Chloe’s personal checking account to cover her luxury shopping sprees, private jet leases, and high-stakes gambling debts in Las Vegas," Sarah revealed. "They didn't just want your father's military money on Saturday because they felt 'entitled' to it, Natalie. They needed it because the federal audit was closing in, and they were thirty days away from complete financial collapse."
Ethan turned from the window, his dark eyes burning with an intense, lethal focus.
"The Department of Defense Inspector General signed the formal seizure order two hours ago," Ethan said smoothly. "All assets registered to Evelyn and Chloe Carter—including their suburban mansion, their luxury vehicles, and Chloe's bank accounts—have been frozen under the Federal Asset Forfeiture Act."
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the city skyline.
For years, Evelyn had told me that Chloe was the "star" of the family, that Chloe was destined for greatness while I was just a quiet girl who had barely managed to secure a modest office job. She had manipulated me, guilt-tripped me, and tried to strip away every shred of my self-worth so she could feed her favorite daughter's insatiable greed.
And now, the very empire of lies they had built on my father's grave was collapsing into dust.

"What is the next step, Sarah?" I asked.
"The federal bail hearing is scheduled for two o'clock this afternoon," Sarah smiled—a cold, sharp expression. "And the prosecutor has asked you to deliver a formal statement."
