Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later.
It was a crisp, brilliant autumn afternoon. The leaves on the massive oak trees in our front yard had turned a stunning shade of crimson and gold, fluttering gently in the crisp October breeze.
I stood on our front porch, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching Eli pedal furiously down the sidewalk on his brand-new bicycle, laughing as his neighborhood friends chased behind him.
He didn't look over his shoulder in fear anymore. He didn't walk with his shoulders hunched to make himself invisible. He took up space in the world with the absolute, unshakeable confidence of a child who knew he was fiercely, unconditionally loved.
The corporate headquarters of Vance Enterprises—now officially rebranded as Horizon Holdings—was thriving downtown under my leadership, operating with transparency, community support, and zero tolerance for arrogance.
As for my parents?
They had eventually found a modest, two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, supported by a meager monthly state subsidy and whatever odd jobs my father could manage in his seventies. They had tried to contact me several more times through intermediaries, but the walls we had built were impenetrable.
They were strangers now—relics of a painful past that no longer had any power to hurt us.
The front gate clicked open, and the mail carrier walked up the steps, handing me a small stack of envelopes.
I flicked through them: utility bills, a magazine subscription, and a handwritten letter bearing a familiar, elegant corporate return address from Marcus Vance.
I opened Marcus’s letter. Inside was a crisp, beautifully framed legal document bearing my full name as sole proprietor and majority stakeholder of our corporate empire, alongside a handwritten sticky note attached to the corner:
“Clara—Just a reminder that the horizon is entirely yours. Keep flying.”
May you like
I smiled, holding the frame against my chest, and looked out across the quiet suburban street.
The sun was dipping below the tree line, casting a warm, golden glow across the rooftops, promising an endless, unbroken horizon ahead.
