Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Corporate Ledger

Three days after the ballroom ceremony, the shockwaves had still not settled over the Carter household.

Daniel had spent forty-eight hours locked in his study, dodging calls from his commanding officers while frantically attempting to scrub his social media accounts clean of Ashley’s livestream disaster. Laurelai had taken to her bed, nursing a migraine born not of physical illness, but of the agonizing realization that her social standing among Washington’s elite had evaporated overnight.

Emily, meanwhile, sat in a sleek, glass-walled conference office overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

Across the polished mahogany desk sat Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Forensic Accounting, and a man who owed his life to a medical evacuation unit Emily had commanded in her second tour.

"You were right, Colonel," Marcus said, sliding a thick leather binder across the table. "We dug into Daniel’s defense-contract logistics firm, Carter Logistics Solutions. On paper, it looks like a standard mid-tier supplier for base provisioning. But when you cross-reference the shipping manifests with federal audit logs from the Department of Defense..." He tapped a finger against a highlighted spreadsheet. "Someone has been systematically skimming millions from high-priority equipment contracts earmarked for overseas deployment."

Emily leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the columns of figures. "Skimming from frontline supply chains? That isn't just embezzlement. That’s a federal felony endangering active service members."

"Worse than that," Marcus replied grimly. "The primary shareholder holding controlling interest in the shell company funneling those funds isn't Daniel. It’s your mother. Laurelai Carter."

A cold fury settled deep in Emily's chest. For years, her family had treated her like a criminal for choosing a life of service, while hiding behind patriotic rhetoric to mask their own systematic corruption. They had built their entire luxury lifestyle on the backs of defrauded taxpayers and compromised military logistics.

"Can we lock it down legally before they realize we're onto them?" Emily asked, her voice dangerously calm.

"The freeze orders are already signed by a federal magistrate," Marcus said, offering her a pen. "All we need is your formal authorization as the primary reporting whistleblower to initiate the asset seizure and corporate audit. It will strip them of every cent, every property, and every illusion of status they possess."

Emily looked down at the pen. She thought of the countless soldiers who went without proper equipment because her family chose greed over duty. She thought of the endless years of ridicule, the slaps to her wrist, the calculated cruelty of her mother and brother.

Without a moment of hesitation, she took the pen and signed her name with crisp, unwavering authority.

"Let's begin," Emily said.
