Chapter 8 - The Breach of Sanctuary

The Sterling manor loomed against the gray winter twilight like an ominous stone tomb. Snow had begun to fall again, dusting the manicured hedges and the long, sweeping driveway that led up to the imposing brick facade.

Because of the emergency protection order, Patricia had been forced to check into a luxury hotel across town, barred by law from setting foot within five hundred yards of the estate while Robert initiated formal eviction proceedings through the probate court.

Robert unlocked the front door with his original brass key, the heavy mahogany swinging inward with a low, echoing groan. The house smelled stagnant—of expensive potpourri, dry wood, and decades of suffocating domestic tyranny.

"Ethan, check the study. Marcus, take the dining room safe. I’ll open the wall unit," Robert commanded quietly, moving with the purpose of a general reclaiming his stolen homeland.

I remained in the entryway, keeping watch near the frosted glass sidelights. Every nerve in my body was screaming. Even though Patricia was legally prohibited from being here, her malevolent presence hung in every crystal chandelier, every oil painting, every gilded mirror that reflected my anxious expression.

Suddenly, a heavy thud resonated from the terrace doors at the rear of the drawing room.

I froze. "Ethan..." I whispered.

Ethan appeared in the hall instantly, a heavy antique brass candlestick in his right hand. "Stay behind me, Claire."

The French doors swung open, letting in a swirl of freezing snow and wind. Stepping over the threshold, drenched in slush and shivering violently, was Patricia.

She wasn't wearing her pristine wool coat. She wore a dark parka, mud caked along the hem of her trousers, her eyes wild, hollow, and frantic. In her hand, she clutched a heavy, steel tire iron she had clearly pulled from her trunk.

"Patricia!" Robert barked, stepping into the hallway. "You are violating a court-mandated order of protection! Get out of this house before I call the precinct!"

Patricia let out a laugh that sounded like broken glass grating against stone. She didn't look at Robert. She didn't look at Ethan. Her blazing, bloodshot eyes locked onto me like heat-seeking missiles.

"You brought this filthy commoner into my home," Patricia hissed, her knuckles whitening around the tire iron. "You let her strip me of my name! You let her take my son! You let her lock me in a cell!"

"Mom, put the weapon down," Ethan warned, his voice shaking with pure, protective rage as he stepped squarely in front of me, shielding my entire body. "Put it down, or so help me God, I will end this myself."

"You wouldn't touch your own mother, Ethan," she snarled, taking a lumbering step forward, raising the iron bar. "She poisoned you! But once she’s gone, you’ll come back! You will all come back to me!"
