Chapter 6 - The True Investment

Six months later. Summer.

The evening sun cast a brilliant, golden light across the ocean horizon at the Nags Head estate.

The wraparound deck was filled with white linen tables, glowing lanterns, and the sweet, ambient sound of ocean waves crashing against the sand.

We were celebrating the one-year anniversary of our wedding, alongside the official launch of a new regional cybersecurity mentorship initiative I had funded using a portion of my firm's profits—providing full college scholarships for young men and women from working-class communities across Virginia.

Over forty guests sat around the tables: my father, Mateo; Lydia; Cole’s university colleagues; my business partners; and young scholarship recipients who were preparing to attend college in the fall.

My father stood up at the head table, raising his glass of iced tea, his eyes shining with proud, emotional tears.

"To my daughter, Elena," Mateo spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly over the ocean breeze. "And to my son-in-law, Cole. Some people think that family is something you inherit in a bank account. But true family is something you build with honesty, hard work, and the courage to stand up for what is right."

The entire crowd raised their glasses, cheering and clapping under the warm summer sky.

I stood beside Cole at the deck railing, wearing a simple white linen dress, the platinum Art Deco sapphire watch glowing softly on my wrist beside my mother’s original Bulova.

Cole wrapped his broad arms around my waist from behind, pulling me close against his chest, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over the sparkling blue ocean.

"Best investment I ever made," Cole whispered softly into my ear, his voice rich with deep, unshakeable love.

I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking into the eyes of the man who had stood by me when the room went cold.

"It wasn't an investment, Cole," I smiled, kissing his lips under the warm Outer Banks sun. "It was just home."
