Chapter 4 - The Deposition Room

The conference room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse was cold, sterile, and aggressively lit by fluorescent overhead panels.

At the center of the long laminate table sat Nolan, looking like a ghost. His shoulders were slumped, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot from sleepless nights. Next to him sat Brooke, nervously chewing her thumbnail, and Vivian, who looked as though she had aged ten years in four days. Her expensive designer suit was rumpled, and her usual haughty posture was replaced by a rigid, defensive slouch.

At the opposite end of the table sat Mr. Vance and me. I wore a crisp charcoal pantsuit, my hair styled impeccably, holding a silver fountain pen over a yellow legal pad.

The court stenographer clicked away quietly on her machine as the presiding magistrate, Judge Thomas Callahan, settled into his chair.

“We are here for the emergency deposition and asset-freezing hearing in the matter of Aldridge v. Aldridge,” Judge Callahan announced, adjusting his half-moon glasses. “Mr. Vance, you requested this emergency session regarding fabricated loan instruments and fraudulent mortgage execution. Please proceed.”

Mr. Vance stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Vance began, his voice echoing smoothly across the room. “Over the past ten years, the defendant, Nolan Aldridge, systematically diverted marital assets and forged his wife’s signature on a $250,000 home equity line of credit. Those funds were subsequently funneled into commercial entities controlled by his mother, Vivian Aldridge, and his sister, Brooke Aldridge, to service personal debts, luxury lifestyle expenses, and failing business ventures.”

Vivian slammed her palm against the table. “That is a scandalous lie! We are legitimate business owners! He willingly gave us help because his wife earned more than she deserved!”

Judge Callahan banged his gavel once. A sharp, cracking sound that made Brooke jump in her seat.

“Order in this courtroom, Mrs. Aldridge, or I will have you removed for contempt,” Judge Callahan warned coldly. He looked down at the forensic accounting reports spread across his desk. “Mr. Vance has submitted certified bank wires matching the exact dates of the HELOC disbursements directly to Aldridge Holdings LLC. Furthermore, handwriting experts have verified that Mrs. Aldridge’s signature on the mortgage modification was electronically falsified using unauthorized credentials.”

Nolan buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, muffled groan.

“Your Honor,” Vivian pleaded, her voice cracking into a desperate whine. “Please… we didn't know it was illegal! We just needed temporary bridge financing—”

“Ignorance of the law is not a defense against grand larceny and mortgage fraud, Mrs. Aldridge,” Judge Callahan interrupted sternly. He looked across the table at Nolan. “Mr. Aldridge, you are facing severe civil penalties, asset forfeiture, and potential criminal referral to the state attorney general’s office for forgery and fraud.”

The judge picked up his heavy wooden gavel.

“I am issuing an emergency freeze on all accounts tied to Aldridge Holdings LLC, your personal business, and any remaining marital assets. Furthermore, the family home is hereby awarded to Mrs. Tess Aldridge free and clear of the fraudulent encumbrance, with all legal fees to be covered by the defendants.”

The gavel fell.

The nightmare was officially over.
