Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Ashford

Two weeks later, the civil lawsuits and corporate restructuring orders hit the local media with the explosive force of a tidal wave.

The grand Ashford mansion—the limestone fortress where Priscilla had ruled with an iron fist of arrogance and cruelty—was officially seized by county marshals to satisfy unpaid municipal bond debts held by Vance Freight Logistics.
On a crisp Thursday afternoon, I drove past the estate gates.
The heavy iron gates stood wide open, no longer guarded by private security. Parked on the circular gravel driveway was a large moving truck, and standing on the front steps, supervising the loading of cardboard boxes, was Priscilla Ashford.
She looked small. Stripped of her cashmere shawls, her diamond tennis bracelets, and her haughty public persona, she looked like an aging, bitter woman whose entire identity had been built on stolen ground.
She turned her head, catching sight of my car slowing down near the entrance.
For a fraction of a second, our eyes locked through the windshield. Priscilla raised her hand as if to gesture angrily, then let it drop to her side, turning away in bitter, helpless defeat.
I didn't stop. I pressed down on the accelerator and drove away toward home.
That evening, sitting in the bright, warm kitchen of my father’s house, Lily sat at the kitchen island coloring a picture of a golden retriever with pink crayons, humming happily to herself.
My father walked in, setting a stack of mail on the counter, and poured two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He handed one to me, clinking his glass against mine.
“To new beginnings,” my father smiled warmly.
“To new beginnings,” I echoed, taking a sip of the sweet, crisp cider.
The divorce proceedings were moving swiftly, backed by unassailable evidence of emotional abuse, financial coercion, and physical assault. Gavin had retreated to a dingy apartment downtown, discarded by his mother’s ruined social circle and stripped of his corporate title, while Priscilla was facing criminal charges for assault and battery.
