Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Past

Three months later, the sun was shining brightly over the waters of the Beaufort Sound.

The salt breeze ruffled the curtains of the historic coastal cottage that had belonged to my mother. The dark, heavy furniture Grant had tried to move in was gone, replaced by light, airy linen couches, fresh flowers, and my mother's favorite oil paintings returning to their rightful places on the walls.

The legal fallout for the Whitaker family had been swift and devastating.

Charlotte Whitaker pleaded guilty to grand larceny and estate fraud to avoid a lengthy trial, receiving a three-year sentence at a minimum-security facility and a massive restitution fine that forced her to sell her beloved Buckhead home.

Grant faced felony embezzlement, forgery, and grand theft charges. Deprived of his mother's money and abandoned by his investors, he accepted a plea bargain resulting in five years of state prison time.

Tiffany Lane had returned to her hometown, completely shunned by Charleston society after her deposition detailing how she had accepted stolen gifts was made public in the local newspapers.

As for me? The divorce was finalized, my mother's estate was fully restored, and every stolen penny had been recovered through court-ordered liquidation of the Whitaker family assets.

I sat on the wide wooden porch of the Beaufort cottage, holding a warm cup of tea, listening to the gentle lap of the tide against the marsh grass.

Beside me on the small side table sat an antique velvet box.

I reached out and opened it. Inside lay the complete 1958 Montgomery Gold Heirloom Ensemble: the necklace, the earrings, the ring, the brooch, and, sitting in the center, item number CM-1187-04—the gold bracelet with delicate magnolia leaves etched around its edges.

I picked up the bracelet, feeling the solid, familiar weight of the 18-karat gold against my skin. I wrapped it around my wrist and fastened the clasp, hearing the clean, sharp click of the safety latch my mother had installed years ago.
