Chapter 4 - The Social Media Explosion

While we were drinking coffee on the veranda the following morning, Pamela did exactly what we expected a thirty-seven-year-old internet influencer to do.

She posted a video.

My phone chimed around 10:00 AM. It was a text from my corporate communications director, Sarah:

“Naomi, I’m sorry to bother you on vacation, but your sister-in-law just posted a ten-minute video on TikTok and Instagram accusing you and Lucas of financial abuse and elderly abandonment. It already has eighty thousand views.”

I opened the link Sarah sent.

On the screen, Pamela sat in the backseat of a cheap rental car, her hair deliberately disheveled, no makeup on, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. Betsy sat beside her, looking frail and distraught, holding a crumpled paper cup.

“Hey guys,” Pamela wept into the camera, her voice dripping with artificial tragedy. “I never thought I’d have to make a video like this. But my brother and his wealthy wife just did something unthinkable. They invited my elderly mother and me on a family vacation to a villa in Pinecrest Lake. But after we arrived, his wife had a disagreement with my mom over... luggage.”

Pamela let out a dramatic sob.

“His wife got so angry that she canceled the entire reservation, had security kick my sixty-eight-year-old mother out into the freezing rain, and froze my brother’s bank accounts so we couldn’t even afford a hotel or a ride home. We had to sit on the curb for four hours waiting for a local taxi. Please share this. People need to know the truth about wealthy corporate bullies who treat family like garbage.”

I stared at the screen, a cold, calm smile spreading across my face.

Lucas walked out onto the deck holding two fresh mugs of coffee. He took one look at my face and the video playing on my screen, and his jaw tightened.

“Is that Pamela?” he asked.

“She’s trying to use her fifty thousand followers to run a public smear campaign,” I said, handing him the phone. “She tagged my company’s official brand page.”

Lucas watched the video, his expression darkening with every second. By the time Pamela reached the part about sitting in the “freezing rain,” Lucas let out a cold, sarcastic laugh.

“It was seventy-two degrees at Pinecrest Lake yesterday,” Lucas said. “And they weren’t sitting on a curb. Evan told me he gave them chairs in the air-conditioned lobby while they waited for their driver.”

He handed the phone back to me. “What do you want to do? I can call my lawyer right now and file a cease-and-desist for defamation.”

“No,” I said, standing up from my lounge chair. “A cease-and-desist makes us look defensive. Pamela built her entire online brand on fabricated reality. It’s time we give her audience actual reality.”

I called Evan at Pinecrest Lake.

“Evan,” I said when he answered. “The lobby and entryway security cameras at the villa... do they record audio?”

“Full high-definition 4K video and crisp audio, Mrs. Hale,” Evan replied instantly. “It’s standard policy for high-end luxury rentals.”

“I need the footage from yesterday afternoon,” I said. “Specifically from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. The moment Betsy kicked my mother’s suitcase, the moment Pamela threatened to record us, and the moment security politely escorted them out.”

“I’ll have the raw video files in your inbox in ten minutes,” Evan said without hesitation. “I’ve already watched them. Your mother-in-law’s behavior was appalling.”

Fifteen minutes later, the video files arrived in my email.

I forwarded them directly to Sarah, my communications director, along with five years of audited credit card statements highlighting Betsy and Pamela’s luxury spending.

“Sarah,” I said over the phone. “Draft an official corporate press statement. Attach the raw, unedited security footage from the villa showing Betsy kicking my mother’s luggage and refusing to share the house. Then attach a redacted summary of the three hundred and forty-two thousand dollars in personal luxury expenses Pamela and Betsy charged to my husband’s card over five years.”

“Are we releasing the credit card logs?” Sarah asked, sounding stunned.

“If they want to make this about money and family,” I said coldly, “let’s show the world exactly how much money they stole from the family they’re crying about.”
