Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The sun rose over Chicago in a dull shade of gray. I hadn't slept a single minute.

Maya sat across from me at her kitchen island, gently pouring a fresh cup of coffee into my mug. She had seen the video three times during the night, and every time the audio played Ryan's quiet whisper, her jaw had tightened with cold disgust.

"Laura, you realize what this video proves, don't you?" Maya said, her voice dripping with serious concern. "This wasn't a sudden, heat-of-the-moment mistake. Ryan and his mother had a system. They’ve discussed 'disciplining' Emma before."

"I know," I whispered, my thumb tracing the rim of the warm coffee mug. "I thought I was being paranoid over the last six months. Every time Emma came back from Diane’s house, she was quiet, clingy, and terrified of making mess or spilling water. Ryan always told me she was just tired from playing."

A sharp knock at Maya's front door shattered the morning silence.

I didn't even have to look through the peephole. I knew Ryan’s heavy, impatient rhythm anywhere.

Maya stood up, but I put my hand on her wrist. "I'll handle this. Keep Emma in the back bedroom."

I walked over and unlocked the heavy deadbolt, swinging the door open just wide enough to stand in the frame.

Ryan was standing in the carpeted hallway wearing his work suit from the day before, his tie loosened, dark circles under his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a man who had spent the night trying to fix a public relations nightmare rather than a father whose home was broken.

"Thank God," Ryan breathed out a heavy sigh, trying to push his way past me into the apartment. "Laura, grab Emma's bag. We're going home right now. Mom is at our house weeping. She hasn't slept all night because of the way you treated her."

I didn't move an inch. I blocked the threshold with my body, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Is that why you're here, Ryan? Because your mother is crying?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

Ryan pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a heavy, irritated breath. "Laura, please don't start this again. Yesterday was an emotional mess for everyone. Mom overreacted because Emma was throwing food, and you completely lost your temper in front of thirty extended family members. Aunt Karen is already spreading rumors that you hit Mom!"

"Diane pinched Emma's arm under the table and then slapped her face, Ryan," I said, leaning closer to him. "And you sat right next to them and watched."

Ryan’s eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp panic. He swallowed hard, adjusting his leather watch strap.

"I... I didn't see her pinch anyone," Ryan stammered, pulling back slightly. "It all happened so fast. Look, Mom comes from a different generation, okay? Back then, a quick tap on the cheek was normal discipline. Is it how we want to raise Emma? No. But you don't destroy our entire marriage over one misplaced smack!"

"A quick tap?" I pulled my phone out of my pocket, unlocked the screen, and held it three inches from his face.

I didn't press play on the video yet. I just held up a frozen screenshot showing his mother's hand wrapped tightly around my daughter's tiny wrist while he looked directly down at them.

The little color left in Ryan's face drained instantly. He looked as if he had just seen a ghost.

"Where... where did you get that?" Ryan's voice cracked, dropping to a frantic whisper.

"Claire," I replied flatly. "And I have the audio, Ryan. I heard every single word you whispered to her."

Ryan reached out wildly to snatch the phone from my hand, but I stepped back into the apartment and slammed the door within an inch of his fingers.

"Laura! Open this door right now!" Ryan began slamming his fist against the heavy wood, his voice losing every ounce of its calm, manipulative tone. "You have no right to record my family! Delete that clip right now or so help me God, you will regret this!"

"Go home to your mother, Ryan," I shouted through the solid door. "Because the next time you see me, it will be in front of a judge."
