Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hallway

The door frame groaned under the impact.

"Mom, stop!" I sobbed, clutching my stomach. "Please!"

"Open the door, Whitney!" her voice shrieked. "Sign the affidavit! Tell the prosecutor it was an accident! If I go to prison, you won't get a single dollar! I'll make sure Richard burns the trust to the ground!"

A second slam echoed through the small room. The top wooden panel of the door cracked down the center.

Through the crack, I saw her face. Her eyes were wide, unblinking, and wild with a terrifying mixture of madness and financial desperation. Behind her in the dark hallway stood my father, Richard, holding a heavy steel crowbar, his face pale and hollow.

"Break the lock, Richard!" she commanded him without turning around. "Do it now before the sirens get here!"

My father raised the crowbar. He looked through the crack in the door, his eyes locking onto mine.

For twenty-nine years, my father had been a coward. He had sat in his recliner while my mother stripped my confidence away bit by bit. He had stayed silent when she struck me. He had allowed her to treat our family like a chessboard.

He stood there in the dark hallway, the crowbar lifted above his shoulder.

"Richard!" my mother screamed at him. "Hit the lock!"

My father looked at me. He saw my hands wrapped protectively over my pregnant belly. He saw the pure terror in my eyes. And for the first time in his miserable, spineless life, something inside him finally snapped.

"No, Brenda," my father whispered.

My mother whirled around, stunned. "What did you say?"

"I said no," Richard repeated, his voice shaking with sudden, overwhelming rage. He dropped the heavy steel crowbar onto the hardwood floor with a deafening CLANG. "Look at us, Brenda! Look at what we're doing! We're breaking into our daughter's house in the middle of the night! We're threatening our unborn grandchild!"

"Shut up, you idiot!" Brenda spat, reaching down to grab the crowbar herself. "If she doesn't drop the charges, we go to federal prison for fraud! The bank is foreclosing on our house next week!"

"Then let them take the house!" Richard roared, grabbing Brenda by her shoulders and pulling her backward away from the bathroom door. "Let them take everything! I won't let you hurt her again!"

Brenda shrieked, clawing at his face, but Richard held her tightly, wrestling her down the hallway toward the broken kitchen door just as bright red and blue lights illuminated the front windows of the house.

Screeching tires echoed from the driveway.

The front door was kicked open.

"Police! Nobody move!" male voices bellowed through the house.

Heavy boots flooded the hallway. I heard my mother screaming curses, the sharp metallic snap of handcuffs locking into place, and my father sobbing uncontrollably against the kitchen wall.

A moment later, the bathroom door was gently pushed open.

Jasper burst into the room, his eyes wild with terror, dropping to his knees beside me on the cold tile floor. He pulled me into his arms, wrapping his body around mine so tightly I could feel the frantic, terrified pounding of his heart against my chest.

"I'm here, Whit," Jasper sobbed into my hair, his hands shaking as he touched my face, my shoulders, my stomach. "I'm here. You're safe. The baby is safe."

I buried my face in his chest, letting out a long, shuddering scream that released twenty-nine years of pain, fear, and survival into the cold night air.
