Chapter 2 - The Audit of Shadows

"Wait! This is a mistake!" Derek shrieked as the two Marshals seized his arms, forcing him down onto his knees against the cold marble. "I didn't know! She's my sister! It's a family matter!"

"It ceased to be a family matter the second you laid hands on the Director of Naval Logistics and Fleet Readiness," Vice Admiral Vance said coldly. "Officers, remove him."

"Mom! Do something! Mom!" Derek screamed as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

Evelyn lunged forward, trying to grab the Marshal's sleeve. "You can't do this! Do you know who my son is?! He works for Sterling Capital! He brings millions into this city! Release him right now, or I'll call the Mayor!"

"Mrs. Barker," a quiet, dry voice spoke from the shadows behind the Marshals.

A silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal suit stepped forward, holding a thick leather folder. Beside him walked two men in plain suits carrying federal credentials.

My father, still fighting for breath in his wheelchair, looked up at the silver-haired man. His eyes widened in shock.

"Secretary Miller?" my father rasped into his oxygen mask.

It was Secretary Robert Miller—the Undersecretary of Defense for Financial Oversight.

Secretary Miller didn't look at Evelyn or Derek. He walked straight over to my father, reached out, and gently took my father's frail, trembling hand in both of his.

"It is an honor to see you again, Arthur," Secretary Miller said softly.

Evelyn blinked, utterly bewildered. "You... you know my husband?"

Secretary Miller turned his gaze onto Evelyn. The warmth left his face instantly, replaced by the severe, unyielding look of a prosecutor in a federal courtroom.

"Twenty-two years ago, Mrs. Barker," Secretary Miller said, "I suffered a massive cardiac arrest at a gas station off Highway 11 in Virginia. My heart stopped. I was dead on the pavement."

Evelyn stared at him, confused. "What does that have to do with us?"

"A young girl in a worn diner uniform dropped her bags, ran across four lanes of traffic, and performed CPR on me for fourteen minutes until the paramedics arrived," Miller said quietly. "She saved my life. When I woke up in the ICU, she was gone. But she dropped a small brass Navy recruiting challenge coin from her pocket. It took me seven years to find out her name."

Secretary Miller turned and looked at me, a profound, quiet respect in his eyes.

"Maya Barker saved my life," Miller continued, turning back to Evelyn. "And when I investigated who she was, I discovered something incredible. I discovered that every month for twenty-five years, fifty percent of her military paycheck—from a Seaman Recruit's meager wages to a Rear Admiral's salary—was quietly routed into an encrypted private medical trust."

Evelyn went rigid. Her skin turned the sickly color of spoiled milk.

"A trust," Secretary Miller continued, opening his leather folder, "that paid for Arthur's specialized pulmonology care, his experimental oxygen therapy, his private nursing staff, and the very house you live in. A trust that you, Mrs. Barker, have been quietly trying to siphon funds from for the last decade."

Vanessa gasped, stepping away from her mother. "Mom... what is he talking about?"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Evelyn hissed, her hands shaking violently.

"No, Mrs. Barker, let us not shut up," Secretary Miller said, lifting a stack of federal subpoena documents from the folder. "Because when Rear Admiral Barker was promoted to flag rank six months ago, federal law required an automated audit of all financial trusts associated with her security clearance."

Miller handed a document directly to one of the plainclothes federal agents standing beside him.

"And that audit revealed that your son, Derek Barker, used his position at Sterling Capital to fraudulently alter Arthur's medical billing statements, embezzlement over four hundred thousand dollars from Maya's private trust to cover his own personal trading debts on Wall Street."

The room went dead silent once again.

Derek, kneeling on the floor in handcuffs, let out a choked, terrified sob. "Mom... help me..."
