Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later.

The spring sun over downtown Chicago was warm, brilliant, and unclouded, casting a golden glow across the rolling green lawns of Millennium Park.

I stood near the edge of the Crown Fountain, wearing a light yellow sundress, the breeze off Lake Michigan catching the ends of my hair. My head was completely healed, leaving no visible scar beneath my curls, and the dialysis machine was nothing more than a fading nightmare in my rearview mirror.

My body was strong. My new kidney, functioning at one hundred percent capacity, was pumping clean, healthy blood through my veins with a steady, powerful rhythm that made me feel invincible.

My phone buzzed softly in my tote bag.

I pulled it out and unlocked the screen. It was an email notification from my attorney, Elena Rostova:

SUBJECT: FINAL RESTITUTION AND ASSET RECOVERY. Maya, the civil default judgment against Richard and Evelyn Whitaker has been fully executed. The Oak Brook property has been sold at auction, clearing all fraudulent lines of credit and returning $1.2 million in liquidated family assets directly to your private trust. Furthermore, Connor Whitaker’s plea agreement has been finalized: three years in state prison with zero financial relief from your estate. You are 100% free and clear.

I locked the screen, slipping the phone back into my bag, and took a deep, full breath of the sweet spring air.

Across the brick plaza, my father—who had quietly accepted a plea deal for accessory to financial fraud and was currently serving two years of probation—had tried calling me three times last week.

I hadn't answered.

I had blocked his number, just as I had blocked Connor’s, just as I had permanently excised every toxic branch of the Whitaker family tree from my life.

They had taught me how dangerous it was to be a daughter who gave too much.

And I had taught them how absolute the destruction is when a woman finally decides to keep her life for herself.

I turned around, walking briskly down the sunlit path toward Michigan Avenue, where a bright, beautiful, unbroken horizon stretched out endlessly before me.
