Chapter 4 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Metropolitan Heritage Gala was the crown jewel of the city's social calendar.

Hosted in the historic glass atrium of the Manhattan Museum of Art, it brought together the governor, the mayor, the city’s oldest dynasties, and the national press corps. Julian and Celeste Varrone had deliberately chosen this event as their public execution grounds. Julian was scheduled to deliver the keynote address on "Corporate Integrity and Civic Leadership"—a speech intended to mark the formal destruction of the Romano Group's reputation.

Outside the museum, flashbulbs exploded like rapid-fire artillery as black town cars and limousines emptied their passengers onto the velvet carpet. The media was in a frenzy. Julian had tipped off every major news network that an "unprecedented announcement" regarding the Romano scandal was imminent.

Inside the green room backstage, I stood before a full-length mirror, hardly recognizing the woman staring back at me.

Clarissa’s personal stylist had dressed me in an emerald-green evening gown that was the exact, identical shade of the dress Celeste had worn the night she assaulted Clarissa. But while Celeste’s dress had screamed loud, tacky excess, this gown was pure, understated majesty. It flowed like liquid silk down to my silver heels, cut with an architectural precision that radiated quiet power. My dark hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant chignon, secured with an antique diamond clip belonging to the Romano family collection.

A knock sounded at the door. Daniel stepped inside.

He wore a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, tailored to perfection. He stopped dead in his tracks the moment his eyes fell on me, his gaze lingering with an intensity that sent a violent shiver down my spine.

"Nora," he said softly, his voice lower than usual. "You look... breathtaking."

My cheeks flushed warm, but I held his gaze. "I feel like an imposter, Daniel. Two days ago I was sweeping broken glass off a banquet floor."

Daniel walked across the room until he was standing merely inches away from me. The clean scent of cedarwood and expensive cologne rolled off him. He reached out, his warm fingers lightly brushing against the silk at my shoulder, grounding me in the reality of the moment.

"You were never an imposter," Daniel said, his steel-gray eyes boring into mine with absolute conviction. "The people out there in that ballroom wear million-dollar clothes to hide the fact that they have rotten souls. You showed bravery, grace, and honor when you had everything to lose. Tonight, you aren't a waitress, Nora. Tonight, you are the conscience of this city."

He offered his arm. "Are you ready to finish this?"

I slipped my hand into the crook of his elbow, feeling the hard, steady muscle beneath his tuxedo. "Let's finish it."

We walked out into the grand atrium.

The moment Daniel Romano entered with me on his arm, a collective gasp swept through the five-hundred-person crowd. Conversations ceased mid-sentence. Glasses were lowered.

Standing on the raised VIP dais near the stage, Celeste Varrone was holding court among a circle of socialites, wearing a lavish crimson gown. The moment she saw me, her champagne flute slipped in her hand, spilling vintage Dom Pérignon over her knuckles.

Her jaw twitched. Her eyes burned with sheer, unbridled fury.

Beside her, Julian Varrone turned, his thick eyebrows knitting together in an angry scowl. How dare they? How dare Daniel Romano bring the "violent servant" to the most exclusive event in the country?

Julian whispered something to the event coordinator, grabbed his speech notes, and immediately marched up the steps of the main stage, seizing the podium microphone ahead of schedule.

The room fell deathly silent.

"Distinguished guests, civic leaders, and members of the press," Julian boomed, his deep voice amplified across the glass ceiling. "Tonight was meant to be a celebration of our city’s philanthropic future. But true leadership requires confronting moral decay when it brazenly flaunts itself in front of our eyes."

He pointed a thick, accusatory finger directly at Daniel and me. Every camera in the room instantly whipped around, blinding us with flashing lights.

"Standing before you is Daniel Romano, a man who has chosen to mock this entire assembly by parading his violent, unhinged employee into this sacred hall! An employee who assaulted my daughter, Celeste, and terrorized an elderly woman in a wheelchair! The Romano Group has proven it is morally bankrupt, financially reckless, and utterly unfit to lead our city's commercial landscape!"

Celeste smiled maliciously from the front row, crossing her arms, savoring the public humiliation.

"Is that so, Julian?" a voice echoed from the back of the atrium.

The sound of a wooden cane striking the marble floor resonated like the ticking of a doomsday clock.

The crowd parted down the center aisle as if divided by an invisible blade. Clarissa Romano walked forward, completely unassisted except for her gold-topped cane. Two high-ranking detectives from the Manhattan District Attorney's Financial Crimes Division walked silently behind her.

Julian Varrone’s voice caught in his throat. His face drained of blood.

"Clarissa...?" Julian stammered through the hot microphone, unable to control his panic.

Clarissa reached the base of the stage. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to. Daniel handed her a wireless microphone from the media riser.

"You speak of moral decay, Julian," Clarissa said, her voice amplified with crystalline clarity. "You speak of my assault. But you seem to have forgotten that the elderly woman your daughter dragged across the floor like a sack of garbage... was me."

A roar of shocked murmurs erupted across the atrium. Reporters lunged forward, their cameras clicking incessantly.

"And while your daughter was busy attacking the matriarch of the family whose loans you rely upon," Clarissa continued, gesturing toward Daniel, "my grandson was working alongside the District Attorney to discover why the Varrone Consortium was so desperate for an excuse to cancel contracts."

Daniel stepped forward, raising a black tablet synchronized with the massive multimedia screens hanging above the stage.

"Three minutes ago," Daniel announced to the entire assembly of city leaders and live-streaming news cameras, "the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission unsealed a twenty-four-count indictment against Julian Varrone for grand larceny, wire fraud, and the embezzlement of over sixty million dollars from the Municipal Workers’ Pension Fund."
