Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the PastFriday morning brought a soft, misty rain that washed over the glittering skyscrapers of Manhattan, casting a cool, calming grey light across my penthouse apartment.

After my routine medical checkup—where the doctor confirmed that my baby girl was healthy, strong, and preparing to make her grand entrance into the world very soon—I returned to Vale-Evelyn Tower to review the final quarterly acquisitions.

As I stepped out of the private elevator onto the forty-fifth floor, I noticed a figure standing near the reception desk.

Even in the dim light of the corridor, I recognized him instantly.

Grayson.

He looked like a ghost of the man he used to be. His designer suit was permanently wrinkled, his shoes scuffed, and his hair unwashed. He had clearly bribed or snuck past building security, desperate for one final confrontation.

When he saw me step out of the elevator, his eyes lit up with a wild, desperate energy.

“Evelyn!” he cried out, taking a stumbling step forward.

Clara immediately stepped between us, her hand resting on her phone, ready to call building security. “Stay back, Mr. Whitmore, or I’ll have the guards escort you out in handcuffs.”

“Evelyn, please—just one minute!” Grayson begged, ignoring Clara completely. He fell to his knees right there on the polished marble floor of the lobby, ignoring the staring employees and security guards. “I’m begging you! I have nowhere to go. They’re foreclosing on my personal bank accounts tomorrow. I’m ruined. I’m homeless!”

I stopped walking. I looked down at the man who had once treated me like a piece of furniture, the man who had stood by while his mistress poured red wine across my pregnant stomach.

“You did this to yourself, Grayson,” I said, my voice entirely devoid of anger, colder and more terrifying than any scream could ever be.

“I was stupid,” he sobbed, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. “I thought Vanessa was exciting. I thought you were... I thought you wouldn't fight back. Please, Evelyn. We were married. Have some mercy.”

“Mercy?” I repeated, tilting my head slightly. “You showed me zero mercy when you humiliated me in public. You showed my unborn child zero mercy when you conspired with a thief to drain our assets. You don't want mercy, Grayson. You just want your money back.”

Grayson slumped forward, resting his forehead against the cold marble floor, his shoulders shaking with wretched, helpless sobs.

“Get him out of my building,” I instructed Clara quietly.

Before Grayson could utter another word, two massive security guards materialized from the hallway, grabbed him firmly by his arms, and hauled him up off the floor, dragging him toward the service elevators as he wept and screamed my name.

I didn't watch him go. I simply turned, walked into my private office, and closed the heavy oak door behind me, sealing out the past forever.
