Chapter 6 - The Light We Found

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was filled with New York's elite—politicians, business tycoons, and influential figures from every corner of the city. Soft orchestra music floated through the air, and crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the crowded room.

It was the annual winter charity gala for the New York Women's Shelter Foundation—a charity I had personally helped organize over the past six months.

I stood near the grand staircase, wearing an elegant, floor-length emerald green silk gown that complemented my dark hair. My left arm was completely healed, showing only a tiny, faint surgical scar near the elbow—a mark of survival, not shame.

"Mrs. Moretti?" a reporter from the New York Times asked, holding a small microphone toward me. "You've raised over two million dollars tonight for domestic violence survivors. What drove you to take on this cause so passionately?"

I looked past the reporter's shoulder, spotting Vincent standing near the grand entrance. He was surrounded by four city council members who were listening to him with deep respect. He caught my eye across the crowded ballroom and offered me a small, private smile that was meant only for me.

I turned back to the reporter, my voice clear, steady, and full of confidence.

"I took on this cause," I said smoothly, "because I know what it feels like to sit on a cold floor in the dark, believing nobody is coming to save you. I want every woman in this city to know that they are never as alone as they think they are—and that there is always a way out."

The reporter nodded, visibly moved, and thanked me before moving off toward the main hall.

A second later, a firm, warm hand settled gently onto the small of my back.

I leaned back against Vincent's broad chest as he stepped up beside me, pulling me gently against his side. He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss against the top of my head.

"You were magnificent up there tonight," Vincent murmured into my ear.

"We raised two million dollars, Vincent," I smiled, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck. "We're opening three new emergency shelters in Brooklyn next month."

"I know," he grinned softly, looking down at me with an expression of absolute devotion. "My accountants are still trying to figure out how you managed to talk the Mayor into donating the city land for free."

"I learned from the best," I teased, tapping his chin.

Vincent chuckled, a rich, warm sound that filled my heart with endless light. He wrapped his arms around my waist, lifting me slightly as he kissed me deeply in the center of the ballroom, completely unbothered by the dozens of eyes watching us.

When he pulled back, his dark eyes were bright with a fierce, unwavering love.

"Are you happy, Lena?" he asked softly.

I looked at my life—at the strength I had discovered, the future I was building, and the extraordinary man who had stood by my side as my protector, my partner, and my husband.

"I am completely, perfectly happy," I whispered, resting my cheek against his heart.

The dark days in the bathroom were gone forever. The fear had been burned away, replaced by a love that was stronger than steel, deeper than the ocean, and entirely ours.
