Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Daniel froze, his face reflecting pure, unadulterated horror.
"Nora?" he gasped, taking an instinctive step toward me. "How... what are you doing here?"
Vivian shrank back into the shadows of the shipping container, looking at me like she had just seen an executioner. "Nora... please, don't look at me like that."
"Don't look at you like that?" My voice rose, trembling with years of bottled-up grief and fury. "You disappeared for six years! You let our mother die thinking you robbed her blind! You let me believe I was completely alone in the world!"
"She didn't steal the money, Nora!" Daniel shouted, lunging forward and gripping my arms with desperate strength. "Listen to me! We don't have time for this! You are in catastrophic danger right now!"
"Let go of me!" I shoved his chest, fighting against his grip. "You lied to me, Daniel! You took leave from your job! You bought fake passports! You made me think you were having an affair—that you were abandoning me!"
Daniel stopped. The realization of what his secrecy had looked like struck him like a physical blow.
"An affair?" he whispered, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Nora, no. Dear God, no. I love you. I have never loved anyone else."
"Then tell me the truth!" I sobbed, the cold wind whipping my hair across my face. "Tell me right now, or I swear to God I'll walk into the nearest police station!"
"The police are on Victor Sterling's payroll!" Vivian cried out, stepping forward, her eyes streaming with tears. "Nora, six years ago, Dad found out Victor was laundering money for a cartel through Meridian Financial. Victor framed Dad, and when Dad threatened to go to the FBI, Victor had him killed in the precinct holding cell."
Vivian swallowed hard, her chest heaving.
"Victor knew Dad told me where the secondary backup drive was hidden. He threatened to kill you and Mom if I didn't hand it over. So I took the emergency money—not to rob Mom, but to buy time and run. I drew his hitmen away from you. I made myself the target so you could live a normal life!"
The truth hit me like a sledgehammer. All those years of hating my sister. All those years of mourning my father's supposed shame.
It was all a calculated illusion designed to keep me breathing.
"Then how is Daniel involved?" I whispered, looking back at my husband.
"Three years ago, I found an anomaly in Meridian's offshore ledgers," Daniel explained rapidly, his voice urgent. "I started digging. I realized Victor Sterling was the man who orchestrated your father’s ruin. I didn't tell you because I knew the grief would destroy you all over again. Six months ago, Vivian reached out to me through a secure channel. She had the decryption key. I had the server access."
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out the fake passports.
"These were for you and Vivian. I was going to send you both to safe coordinates in Switzerland while I handed the evidence to the Justice Department. I couldn't risk Sterling finding out that you were my weakness."
Suddenly, the harsh beam of high-powered headlights cut through the darkness of Pier 14.
Two black Cadillac Escalades roared into the gravel lot, their tires screeching as they formed a barricade across the only exit road.
The doors flew open. Men in heavy tactical jackets stepped out, their hands drawing suppressed pistols from beneath their coats.

And from the passenger seat of the lead vehicle stepped Victor Sterling himself.
