Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Foundation

The morning sun rose over Chicago, washing the glass skyscrapers and brick facades in a brilliant, golden warmth.

Parked outside the red-brick building of Vance Ventures, two federal police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights were hauling away a white unmarked surveillance van. Inside, two corporate operatives from a notorious private intelligence firm were sitting in handcuffs, their encrypted comms gear confiscated by federal cyber-agents.

Back inside the sleek, quiet boardroom, the three of us sat around the polished marble table.

Marcus looked exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes, but a slow, triumphant smile was spreading across his face. Eliam sat beside me, holding my hand so tightly our knuckles brushed.

“The FBI cyber unit confirmed that the threat group has been dismantled,” Eliam said softly, letting out a breath he seemed to have been holding for eight months. “Our patents are fully protected under federal industrial security acts. Dr. Clara Vance’s clinical trial is safe to proceed.”

I looked at my husband, then across the table at my brother.

“You both acted like complete idiots,” I said, my voice stern, though a small smile betrayed the relief flooding my chest. “Next time you decide to launch a revolutionary medical startup to save humanity, you loop your actuary wife into the business plan on day one.”

Marcus laughed, leaning back in his chair. “Noted, Maya. Absolutely noted.”

Eliam turned toward me, his eyes shining with profound apology and deep, abiding love. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—not a toxic necklace this time, but a simple, elegant silver pendant shaped like an intricate gear, symbolizing the core of what we had built together.

“I’m sorry I lied to you, Maya,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Thank you for not walking away when the foundation shook.”

“I didn't walk away, Eliam,” I said, resting my head gently against his shoulder as the morning light poured through the tall glass windows, illuminating a future that was finally secure, transparent, and entirely our own. “I just helped you reinforce the walls.”
