Chapter 6 - A Brand New Horizon

Six months later, the coast of Cannon Beach, Oregon, looked like a painting.
The Pacific Ocean stretched out in endless, sapphire waves, crashing gently against the massive silhouette of Haystack Rock. The air was crisp, salty, and filled with the cries of seagulls drifting on the sea breeze.
I stood on the balcony of my brand-new oceanfront accounting office—Sterling Financial Consulting—holding a mug of hot coffee.
My business was thriving. Free from the burden of managing Nathan's chaotic corporate accounts, I had launched my own private firm, helping women navigate complex divorces, financial recovery, and asset protection.
A soft knock sounded at my office door.
My new administrative assistant, Sarah, stepped inside with a warm smile. "Claire, your 2:00 PM appointment is here. She's a bit nervous."
"Send her right in, Sarah," I replied warmly.
A woman in her mid-thirties stepped into the room, holding her handbag tightly against her waist, her eyes wide with anxiety and hesitation—an expression I recognized all too well.
I walked over, offered her a comfortable leather chair, and handed her a fresh cup of tea.
"Welcome," I said softly, sitting down across from her with a clean, blank legal pad. "Tell me your story. We're going to fix it together."
As the woman began to speak, her voice slowly growing stronger with every sentence, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the vast, open ocean.

I had spent eleven years waiting by a porch light for a man who never valued my worth. But as the afternoon sun illuminated my office, shining brightly on the silver nameplate on my desk—Claire Sterling, Founder—I knew that I would never wait in the dark for anyone ever again.
My past was behind me. My life was my own. And the future belonged entirely to me.
