Chapter 18 - The Broken Ring

The harsh glare of the cruiser spotlights revealed Julian in all his pathetic, stripped-down reality. The designer clothes were soaked with muddy harbor water, the expensive veneer completely destroyed. When the police officers shoved him onto the frozen timber decking and snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists, he didn't look like a high-powered executive; he looked like a broken ghost.
As they hauled him toward the squad car, he turned his head, his hollow eyes searching for mine in the freezing rain.
"Eleanor..." he whimpered, his voice trembling like a child’s. "Please. Think about Ben and Lily. You can't let them send their father to federal prison. Tell them it was an accident. Tell them we had a disagreement over property!"
I walked slowly across the wet planks until I was standing two feet from him. Gordon stood half a step behind me, his solid, warm presence a protective wall at my back. Ben and Lily stood at the edge of the pavilion, watched by two compassionate officers, their faces calm, resolute, and completely free of fear.
"You didn't think about Ben and Lily when you looted their college funds, Julian," I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of hatred—only cold, absolute truth. "You didn't think about them when you brought your mistress to that airport terminal in front of the cameras just to see me crawl. You broke this family for your vanity. Now you can answer to the law."
As the officers pushed his head down into the backseat of the patrol car, a small velvet box slipped from his wet pocket onto the asphalt. It popped open, revealing the massive diamond ring he had bought with stolen trust funds—the ring he had promised Chloe.
Gordon walked forward, picked up the box, and handed it directly to the arresting detective. "Evidence of embezzlement, Detective. Add it to the indictment."
