Chapter 13 - The Confession on Tape

Inside the Rochester Federal Building, the atmosphere was sterile, harsh, and utterly silent.
Special Agent Mark Alvarez of the FBI’s Major Crimes Division sat across a stainless-steel table from us, the microcassette recorder playing the faded tape from Box 414.
Through the scratchy static of 1988, Evelyn’s younger voice echoed through the interrogation room, cold, calculated, and clear:
*“...Arthur, the wire transfers must clear before the Keating escrow closes. If Julian finds out that Nola isn't the only child we routed through the Seneca clinic, he'll go to Ruth. We tell him the baby died. We tell Julian the money vanished. He’ll sign whatever confession I put in front of him to protect the girl.”*
Then came Arthur Vance’s reply on the tape:
*“And what about the other one? The twin?”*
I froze. Julian’s hand clamped down onto the edge of the metal table with enough force to warp the trim.
*“The twin is already in Maine,”* Evelyn’s recorded voice replied without a shred of remorse. *“Adopted out to the Henderson family for fifty thousand cash. Julian will never know she existed. Nola is the only one who stays.”*
The tape ended with a soft click.
The room fell into an abyss of silence so deep you could hear the neon lights buzzing overhead.
I turned slowly to look at Julian. His eyes were red, brimming with tears of pure agony. He stared at the tape recorder as if it had driven a dagger through his chest.
"A twin..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking into pieces. "Nola... you had a twin sister."
Grandma Ruth closed her eyes, two solitary tears cutting paths down her weathered cheeks. "Evelyn told us the second infant was stillborn in the delivery room. She wouldn't let Julian see the body. She had the clinic cremate the remains before we even arrived."
Agent Alvarez stood up, his face dark with determination. He placed both hands on the table.
"Arthur Vance just committed federal bank robbery and attempted murder in Geneva," Alvarez said. "We’ve already issued an interstate warrant. Within the hour, Florida State Troopers will take Evelyn Mercer into federal custody in Sarasota. But Miss Keating... Julian... if this ledger is accurate, your sister’s name in 1988 was listed as Clara. And according to these records, she was placed in Bar Harbor, Maine."
I stood up, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Is she alive?"

"We don't know," Alvarez said honestly. "The Henderson family disappeared from state tax registries in 2004. But Vance knows where she is. That's why he wanted this ledger. He wasn't just hiding his tracks—he was using the identities of those stolen children to extort their adoptive families."
