Chapter 5 - The Legal Wall

Two days after my return, I received a formal certified letter delivered to my downtown condo.

It wasn't from my parents begging for grocery money. It was an official legal summons on heavy parchment paper, bearing the letterhead of a local civil litigation attorney named Howard Sterling.

The document claimed that I was legally obligated to provide "familial financial support" under a rarely enforced state filial responsibility statute, demanding an immediate lump-sum payment of forty-thousand dollars to settle my parents' mounting commercial debts and secure their housing.

I sat at my kitchen island, reading the legal jargon with a faint, amused smile.

My parents hadn't learned a single thing. Instead of looking for jobs, cutting expenses, or selling their unnecessary possessions, they had spent their last remaining dollars hiring a predatory divorce lawyer to try and sue me into submission.

I picked up my phone and called Marcus Vance, the senior commercial litigator who managed my grandfather’s estate trust.

"Marcus," I said as soon as he answered. "I just received a frivolous filial support summons filed by Howard Sterling on behalf of my parents."

Marcus let out a dry, rumbling laugh on the other end of the line. "Howard Sterling? Oh, Valerie, that ambulance-chaser hasn't won a financial liability case in a decade. He preys on desperate people who don't know the law."

"Can he actually force me to pay their debts?" I asked.

"Not a chance in hell," Marcus assured me smoothly. "Filial responsibility laws in this state apply strictly to destitute elderly parents who require emergency medical care when they have zero assets. Your parents own two unencumbered plots of land in North Georgia that they inherited from your uncle, and your father transferred title to a vintage boat into a third-party cousin's name just last month to hide assets from creditors. My firm will file a motion to dismiss with prejudice by tomorrow morning, and we’ll counter-file for malicious legal harassment."

"Do it," I instructed. "And make sure Howard Sterling knows who he's playing with."

By Friday afternoon, the motion to dismiss had been filed, accompanied by a comprehensive forensic asset disclosure proving that my parents had actively concealed personal property while attempting to extort their daughter through the courts.

Howard Sterling dropped the case faster than a hot potato, reportedly refusing to return my parents' non-refundable retainer fee when they showed up at his office screaming for blood.

The legal wall was built, fortified, and impenetrable.
