Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

“Julian! Julian, help us!” Vanessa’s scream broke through the garden as Alexander guided me down the stone pathway.

I didn't turn around, but I could hear every humiliating detail unfolding behind us.

“Stay away from me, Vanessa,” Julian’s voice was venomous, stripped entirely of the romance he had projected an hour earlier. “Are you out of your mind? Your father is facing federal indictment! Your family business is bankrupt! You dragged my family into this disaster!”

“Julian, we’re getting married in twenty minutes!” Vanessa wept hysterically, the sound of her expensive satin gown rustling frantically. “The priest is here! The guests are here! Look at my dress!”

“There is no wedding!” an older, booming voice shouted. It was Arthur Sterling, Julian’s father and the founder of Sterling Logistics. He shoved his way through the crowd, his face purple with rage. “Julian, take off that boutonnière right now! We are leaving!”

“Mr. Sterling, please!” Richard cried out, his voice reduced to a humiliating whimper. “We have contracts! Our merger through this marriage will stabilize the firm! We can negotiate with Vale!”

“Negotiate with Alexander Vale?” Arthur Sterling barked, laughing in raw disbelief. “Richard, you arrogant fool, nobody negotiates with Vale once he draws blood! You’re a corpse! And my company isn't getting buried in the same grave with you! Julian, get in the car!”

“Julian!” Vanessa wailed, running across the gravel, completely ignoring the fact that her veil was tearing on the rosebushes. “Julian, don’t leave me!”

*Slap.*

A collective gasp echoed across the lawn. Vanessa shrieked as she hit the ground, clutching her cheek. Julian stood over her, his hands trembling with rage.

“Don't you ever touch me again,” Julian hissed. “You told me your sister was a nobody. You told me your family held all the cards! You’re nothing but a fraud, Vanessa. Keep the ring—it’s fake anyway, just like everything else in this house.”

Alexander opened the rear passenger door of the Maybach for me. The interior was a sanctuary of soft, hand-stitched leather, cool air conditioning, and absolute quiet. He took a plush, dry cashmere blanket from the console and wrapped it securely around my shivering body.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice entirely devoid of the fury he had shown my family. There was only deep, profound concern in his dark eyes.

“I’m fine,” I whispered, leaning my head against the soft leather headrest. “I just… I knew they were shallow, Alexander. I knew they never loved me the way they loved Vanessa. But to shove me into the water… to laugh at me like I was street trash…”

Alexander sat beside me, closing the heavy door. The thick soundproofing sealed out the chaos outside—Vanessa’s wails, Richard’s desperate screams, the sound of luxury cars peeling out of the gravel driveway as guests fled the sinking ship.

He took my cold hands between his warm palms, bringing them to his lips.

“You spent your life trying to earn love from people who only understand transactions, Emily,” he said gently. “Now, they are going to learn what a real transaction feels like. Daniel will ensure they lose every single luxury they used to mock you.”

He looked out the tinted window. Richard Whitmore was on his knees by the fountain, his head in his hands, while Patricia screamed at the departing caterers who were already packing up the silver trays.

“Drive,” Alexander commanded the chauffeur.

The black convoy moved smoothly forward, leaving the ruins of the Whitmore dynasty behind in a cloud of dust.
