Chapter 5 - The Monday Reckoning

By seven o'clock on Monday morning, the glass-and-steel tower of Bennett Holdings on Financial Center Plaza in downtown Boston was humming with cold, corporate efficiency.

I sat behind the sprawling walnut desk on the sixty-fourth floor, dressed in an impeccably cut navy Armani suit. The morning sun broke over Boston Harbor, casting long golden bands across the marble floor. On my desk lay two distinct files: one bearing Tyler Walker's name in bold red font, and the other stamped with the corporate seal of Apex Freight Logistics—the regional transport firm where Jason served as director of fleet operations.

A quiet tap sounded at the heavy double doors before Daniel Vance walked in, holding a steaming porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea.

"Good morning, Madam Chairwoman." He set the tea on the coaster beside my tablet. "The private security detail has been stationed in the ground-floor lobby as you requested."

"Have they arrived?" I asked, taking a sip.

"Tyler Walker arrived forty minutes ago. He attempted to use his keycard at the executive turnstiles. When it was rejected, he caused a disturbance with the lobby guards. Jason arrived ten minutes later, attempting to use his commercial vendor clearance to bypass security." Daniel handed me a small digital remote. "I had them escorted to Conference Room B on the concourse level. They believe they are meeting with our Chief Legal Officer to negotiate a settlement."

"Let's not keep them waiting," I said, standing up.

Down on the concourse level, Conference Room B was an aquarium of frosted glass and tension.

When Daniel and I stepped through the door, Jason and Tyler both shot to their feet.

Tyler looked like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His eyes were bloodshot, his collar rumpled, and his hands trembled as he clutched a leather briefcase to his chest. Jason looked equally haggard, dark purple bags hanging beneath his eyes.

"Claire!" Jason took two hurried steps forward, stopping when Daniel took a single, imposing step in front of him. "Claire, thank God. We need to fix this. Look, Tyler brought the full financial reconciliations. We went through them all weekend. It was an accounting misunderstanding! The offshore vendor account was set up by his predecessor! Tyler didn't know!"

Tyler nodded frantically, his face pale and slick with sweat. "Yes! Exactly! Claire, please, I swear to God I didn't know! My senior VP told me to approve those invoices! I was just following protocol! You can't send this to the DA. If the DA gets involved, I'm ruined. Mom had to be sedated yesterday, Claire! Her blood pressure spiked, she's in bed... she's heartbroken!"

I walked to the head of the conference table, pulled out the heavy leather executive chair, and sat down. I didn't invite either of them to sit.

"Your mother isn't heartbroken, Tyler," I said evenly. "She's terrified. Because half of Lexington now knows that the son she paraded around like royalty is a common embezzler."

Tyler flinched as if burned.

"Claire, listen to reason," Jason pleaded, leaning over the table, his knuckles white against the glass. "Even if Tyler made a mistake, we're your family! What kind of person destroys her own family over corporate paperwork? If you do this to Tyler, you destroy my career too. Do you know how small the Boston logistics community is? If my brother is indicted for fraud, Apex Freight will drop me by the end of the week!"

"Apex Freight won't drop you by the end of the week, Jason," I said quietly, opening the second folder on the table.

Jason froze. His eyes dropped to the blue folder, recognizing his company's logo. "What... what is that?"

"Apex Freight Logistics holds a twenty-two-million-dollar exclusive freight forwarding contract with Bennett Holdings' maritime division," I said, turning the pages slowly. "That single contract represents sixty-eight percent of your company's annual operating revenue. It's the reason your CEO hired you as director of fleet operations three years ago."

Jason’s mouth parted, all the color draining from his face until he looked like a ghost. "You... you gave Apex that contract?"

"I approved it," I replied. "Three years ago, you came home from work depressed, complaining that your firm was struggling, that your boss was threatening layoffs, and that you were worried you wouldn't be able to provide for us. You spent three weeks drinking yourself to sleep on the sofa."

I looked up, meeting his horrified, hollow stare.

"The next week, an anonymous institutional client awarded Apex Freight a twenty-two-million-dollar sole-source transport contract. Your CEO promoted you the following Monday, gave you a forty percent raise, and made you regional director. And what did you do with that victory, Jason?"

Jason couldn't speak. He trembled violently, his hands gripping the edge of the conference table for support.

"You took your mother and Tyler out to an eighty-dollar-a-plate steakhouse," I said, every word hitting him like a physical blow. "You bought your mother a diamond brooch to celebrate your 'brilliance.' And when you came home, you told me that if I worked a little harder at my little office job, maybe one day I could understand what it felt like to be a real provider."

A choked sob caught in Jason's throat. "Claire... I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know..."

"You didn't know because you never wanted to know," I said coldly. "You wanted to believe you were the king of our household, even while standing on a foundation I built for you."

I closed the blue folder with a definitive snap.

"Effective at nine o'clock this morning, Bennett Holdings has exercised its right to terminate the Apex Freight contract under Clause 14—the commercial integrity violation clause."

"No..." Jason whispered, his voice failing completely. "No, no, Claire, please! Apex will go bankrupt! They'll fire me within an hour!"

"That sounds like an issue between you and your board of directors," I said.

Beside him, Tyler suddenly lunged forward, slamming his hands onto the glass table, his panic turning into feral, desperate rage. "You can't do this! You think you're untouchable because you have Daddy's money? I know people, Claire! I know the vendors Apex was using! If I go down, I'm taking you down with me! I'll tell the press that Bennett Holdings used shell companies to funnel contracts to your husband's firm! I'll drag your father's name through every tabloid in New England!"

Daniel Vance didn't even wait for my command. He reached into his suit pocket, pulled out an audio recorder, and pressed stop with a sharp, metallic click.

"Extortion and witness tampering on corporate premises," Daniel said mildly, glancing at Tyler. "That will add a mandatory minimum of three years to the state fraud indictment."

Tyler’s breath caught in his throat. He looked at the recorder, then at Daniel, and finally at me, realizing with absolute finality that every move he made only tightened the noose around his neck.

Before anyone could say another word, the conference room door swung open.

My chief security officer, Marcus Vance—Daniel’s younger brother—stepped inside, accompanied by two uniformed Boston Police detectives and an investigator carrying a federal badge.

"Madam Chairwoman," the lead detective said, nodding to me with crisp professionalism. "We have the warrants for Mr. Tyler Walker regarding the falsified interstate freight manifests."

Tyler dropped to his knees, his briefcase spilling papers across the polished floor as the detectives moved forward with handcuffs.

Jason backed away into the corner, his face buried in his hands, weeping uncontrollably.

I stood up, buttoned my blazer, and looked down at Tyler as cold steel clicked around his wrists.

"Take him out through the main lobby," I told the detectives. "I want the morning press pool to get a very clear picture of what happens when someone tries to steal from Bennett Holdings."

As they dragged Tyler toward the door, the investigator paused, turning back toward my desk with a somber expression.

"Madam Chairwoman, there's one more thing," the investigator said, lowering his voice. "During the preliminary seizure of the offshore accounts this morning, we discovered a secondary signature authorized on Tyler Walker's forged manifests."

I paused, looking at the investigator. "Whose signature?"

May you like

The investigator glanced toward the corner where Jason was slumped against the wall.

"Not his," the investigator said quietly. "The secondary corporate guarantor on the fraudulent accounts was your late father’s former partner... and the money wasn't being stolen for Tyler. It was being funneled into a hostile takeover bid against your voting shares."
